What's the age of the moon? It could be waning

WASHINGTON (AP) — That old moon might not be as antique as we thought, some scientist think. They say it's possible that it isn't a day over 4.4 billion years old.

But other astronomers disagree with a new study's conclusions. They think the moon is up to its typical age-defying tricks and is really pushing 4.6 billion as they have suspected all these years.

Either way, the new analysis of an important moon rock brought back by the Apollo 16 mission is showing that the moon isn't ready to give up its true age and origins quite yet, even though scientists thought they had it all figured out a decade or two ago.

"It's not as ancient as we might think," said study chief author Lars Borg, a geochemist at the Lawrence Livermore National Lab. His study appears online Wednesday in the journal Nature.

The study uses new techniques and radioactive isotopes of lead and other elements to date the moon rock at 4.4 billion years old. What's key is that this is a special type of rock that would have floated up to the moon's crust soon after its theorized ocean of molten rock cooled. That supposedly happened soon after the moon formed as a result of a spectacular crash between Earth and a planet. The chunks that broke off formed the moon.

That means there are two possibilities, Borg said. Either the moon is 200 million years younger or the accepted theory of a molten rock ocean on the moon is wrong, he said.

Borg acknowledges that some moon rocks have been dated at nearly 4.6 billion years old. But those conclusions could be wrong because of weaker rock dating techniques used in the past, he said.

Outside scientists said Borg did good work coming up with a date for the Apollo 16 rock but may have jumped to the wrong conclusion on lunar age or origins. They said it's possible that the rock is from a smaller molten rock ocean or was created when the moon was bombarded by space debris which was much more common a few billion years ago.

Borg's conclusion "is a little bit fancy for my taste," said Erik Asphaug of University of California, Santa Cruz, who recently published a theory that Earth used to have a second smaller moon until it crashed into the bigger one.

MIT astronomer Maria Zuber called the study in Nature "very puzzling."

. . .Let's go check it out, and make sure !

the problem with these nuts is that they date rocks. time for some good ol' american girls and boys to show these scientists a good time. all we got to do is to find out the first time that a guy said, "say, isn't that the moon up there?" then they rocked and rolled, and voila, you have the first moon rock date. i just love science. it's all about guys and gals.

Your a fckn idiot. The only age you know is the age of the last teeny bopper you knocked up.

Green Beret .... he is only kidding ... lighten up fool ! Makes you the fckn idiot!

Maybe the rock they dated at 4.4 is something that just crashed there. Only way to really tell is to drill down deep then do your dating.

So were talking a few hundred million years on a scale of nearly 4.5 billion years? Maybe it's just me, but I don't see the significance?
      • RB 9 mths ago
Well maybe it's just *me* Eric, but I think every single step in acquiring knowledge is significant. Some of the things we turn up lead only to a minor "hmph" moment, but others are foundational to still greater discoveries -- even if decades later -- which would not have been realized if not for the improved accuracy of the preceding ones.

        RB, I stand corrected.
      • Dave 8 mths ago
RB is correct but that assumes that Gregory The Electrician is wrong in saying the moon is only 10,000 years old which fits with the delusional fools that claim the Earth is only 6-10 thousand years old also.

This is open to a lot of debate. Its always good to continue to wonder and ask questions about the origins of our surroundings. Pinpointing origins of creation and existence is difficult to clearly answer. Whether you believe in an omnibenevolent and omnipotent being, or the slapping around of particles creating the stars that cook up the material that we exist in, all that matters is that we continue to seek out the answers of truth.

Personally I believe in a mix. I feel there is intelligent design due to the fact that everything works and has worked in such way that is beautiful. Also, I feel that as of right now we as human beings just can't comprehend the vastness and structure of the universe. I would compare it to explaining astronomy to an ant. I hope for break throughs and a better understanding. I know we will get there. But all in good time.
      • Dave 8 mths ago
Just look at the human body and tell us how "intelligently designed" it is. There is no supporting evidence for that and a lot to support evolution. But you go on deluding yourself if that is what you choose to do.

I'm just glad scientific consensus isn't based on yahoo commentary.

Whether you believe in creationism or the big bang theory your going to assume the moon is roughly the same age as the earth
    • Ubonabasi Collins  •  9 mths ago
Since Nasa can not tell the truth about the lunar structures because they claimed to have landed in the moon I believe the moon is as old as the Universe.
      • A Yahoo! User 9 mths ago
The universe is about 13 + billion years old. Our sun wasn't even born then. Try again.
      • Ubonabasi Collins 9 mths ago
The Sun powered our Universe. The western civilization believed the Sun to be God that was the reason a day was set aside to worship the Sun as Sunday.
Sunday is Sun worshipping day. This is the ugly part of Christianity, they hide the truth that could have brought peace and love to humanity. The west misled the world with fake religious concepts with promise of life in heaven after death but no one wants to die to go heaven and not even Pope or Emam to start with.

Even the Catholic Church recognizes evolution and the "general" age of the universe. Time to come out of the dark ages folks.
      • Gregory the Electrician 9 mths ago
They have made other mistakes in the past as well.
      • Dave 8 mths ago
Gregory The Electrion is an IDIOT! Delusional idiot at that believing in fairy tales.
    • dmitri  •  9 mths ago
I want nasa to release classified moon landing pictures, including hours of footage. It's time to tell the truth about ancient lunar structures.
    • mindnova  •  9 mths ago
So we have a Borg wanting to date a moon rock, resistance is futile.
    • Harley  •  9 mths ago
Everybody before me was wrong, only I know what the truth is and even though I can't prove it I want everybody to understand the simple fact.. everybody before me was wrong.

End result of outcome based education.. Welcome to the socials states of the former free americas.

You want to know the true age of the Moon? Find the oldest rock on the South Pole. Simple..
Antarctica is the remnant of a planet that struck the Earth. When this happened, it caused the great flood. A chunk of the planet skimmed the Earth up to India and formed the Moon. Australia had most of it's surface stripped away due to the initial blast and wall of water that swept across the entire planet.
Take a good look at what I'm talking about. Google Earth...

before the moon collided with her sister and became one, its more than 15 billion years.

I think we are all missing what might be the best news in all this. There is some controversy over certain things here on Earth, like the age of some gold mines, the pyramids, many of the MonoLithic sites, etc.... with a new way to finally date rock, maybe we can figure out how to date these things. Surely something this smart can determine how long ago a cut mark was made. You know... maybe something like the Tri-Corder on Star Trek!!!
