White House: Obama ending vacation due to Irene

VINEYARD HAVEN, Mass. (AP) — Urging everyone in Hurricane Irene's path to get ready, President Barack Obama decided to cut his vacation short Friday and return to the White House for a storm he described as potentially historic.

White House spokesman Josh Earnest said the president would leave Martha's Vineyard a day early, on Friday night, because it was prudent to be in place in Washington as Irene strikes the Eastern Seaboard.

Earnest said the president told staff of the change shortly after urging the millions of Americans in the path of the hurricane to heed instructions from state and local officials, especially if directed to evacuate.

"Don't wait, don't delay," Obama said. The storm was on course to rake the coastline from North Carolina to New England over the weekend.

The president, speaking from his vacation rental on the island, said the federal government is "bringing all federal resources to bear" in response.

"I cannot stress this highly enough, if you are in the projected path of this hurricane you have to take precautions now," he said.

Illustrating government preparations, Earnest said that the administration conducted a national exercise to test emergency preparedness in 2009. He said the exercise included a simulated hurricane that struck New York City. He said the president participated in that exercise.

Though Martha's Vineyard is in Irene's path, Earnest said Obama's decision to return to Washington Friday night, instead of Saturday as planned, was not made out of worry about his personal safety.

First lady Michelle Obama and the couple's two daughters, Sasha and Malia, were to join the president on his flight home. Obama has been vacationing in Martha's Vineyard since Aug. 18.

Obama said he had been briefed on Irene's status Friday morning by top federal officials. He also talked to governors of states and mayors of communities in the expected hurricane path, including mayors Michael Bloomberg of New York and Michael Nutter of Philadelphia.

Warnings were in effect from North Carolina to New Jersey.

As the president spoke, rains from Irene's outer bands began hitting the Carolinas, along with 6- to 9-foot waves. On Martha's Vineyard, though, Obama stood in the shade of a poplar tree outside a gray-shingled cottage. Otherwise it was bright sunshine, not a cloud in the sky.

The president cited two government web sites, one in English and one in Spanish, that provide advice on how to prepare for emergencies: www.ready.gov and www.listo.gov.

He said the Federal Emergency Management Agency has been deploying teams along Irene's projected path. The agency has millions of liters of water, millions of meals and tens of thousands of cots and blankets positioned along the Eastern Seaboard, he said.

And the American Red Cross has been preparing shelters in North Carolina and other states, he said.

Obama cautioned that it would take time after the storm to begin rescue operations and get resources to people in need.

"So the more you can do to be prepared now, making a plan, make a supply kit , know your evacuation route, follow instructions of your local officials, the quicker we can focus our resources after the storm on those who need help the most," he said.

"All indications point to this being a historic hurricane."

Two years ago, Obama's first vacation on Martha's Vineyard as president was delayed by Hurricane Bill.

Wonderful Mr President! At least you aren't going to simply fly over the hurricane damage in Marine One, then tell the head of FEMA "good job Brownsie."

Try and Guess WHO I AM !!!!! This may shock you!

1 ) I was born in one country, raised in another. My father was born in another country.
      2) I was not his only child. He fathered several children with numerous women.
      3) I became very close to my mother, as my father showed no interest in me.
      4) My mother died at an early age from cancer.
      5) Later in life, questions arose over my real name.
      6) My birth records were sketchy and no one was able to produce a legitimate, reliable birth certificate.
      7) I grew up practicing one faith but converted to Christianity, as it was widely accepted in my country, but I practiced non-traditional beliefs & didn't follow Christianity, except in the public eye under scrutiny.
      8) I worked and lived among lower-class people as a young adult, disguising myself as someone who really cared about them.. That was before I decided it was time to get serious about my life and I embarked on a new career.
      9) I wrote a book about my struggles growing up. It was clear to those who read my memoirs that I had difficulties accepting that my father abandoned me as a child.
      10) I became active in local politics in my 30's then with help behind the scenes, I literally burst onto the scene as a candidate for national office in my 40s.
      11) They said I had a "golden tongue" and could talk anyone into anything. That reinforced my conceit.
      12) I had a virtually non-existent resume, little work history, and no experience in leading a single organization. Yet I was a powerful speaker and citizens were drawn to me as though I were a magnet and they were small roofing tacks
      13) . I drew incredibly large crowds during my public appearances. This bolstered my ego. At first, my political campaign focused on my country's foreign policy.----
      14) I was very critical of my country in the last war and seized every opportunity to bash my country.
      15) But what launched my rise to national prominence were my views on the country's economy. I pretended to have a really good plan on how we could do better and every poor person would be fed & housed for free.
      16) I knew which group was responsible for getting us into this mess. It was the free market, banks & corporations. I decided to start making citizens hate them and if they were envious of others who did well, the plan was clinched tight. I called mine "A People's Campaign" and that sounded good to all people.
      17) I was the surprise candidate because I emerged from outside the traditional path of politics & was able to gain widespread popular support.
      18) I knew that, if I merely offered the people 'hope' , together we could change our country and the world. So, I started to make my speeches sound like they were on behalf of the downtrodden, poor, ignorant to include "persecuted minorities".
      19) My true views were not widely known & I needed to keep them unknown, until after I became my nation's leader. I had to carefully guard reality, as anybody could have easily found out what I really believed, if they had simply read my writings and examined those people I associated with. I'm glad they didn't. Then I became the most powerful man in the world. And the world learned the truth.

      Who am I?----

Good excuse as any. But Obama was on vacation and he shot 122 with Many Mulligans and he run out of golf balls, so his caddy told him to not quit his day job and he should go back to work beign president and not think about the PGA tour. And presidential #$%$ cutter and moan runner, Perry who is a born again something or other and a straight talker, right, yea right, and he wants to shred our Constitution and ruin our foundations instead of abiding by the law of the land, and that is typical of republicans, and radical enough to impeach him, but in submitting his bill from Texas for detaining, arresting, and capturing illegal immigration from Mexico and stopping potential terrorist invasion, the USA government must address the Mexican invasion. So look at how Perry wants to cut and slash spending and give the wealthy tax deductions, but he is all for raising the tax burden by submitting this large tax bill from Texas after he has gutted our government of tax revenue. Go scratch off a lottery ticket, Perry, like the rest of the USA does because you are so cheap and won't stand up and tax the wealthy so our USA government has revenue to work with basic security issues.
