All Whites pedigree in NZ Under-17 squad

The sons of two former All Whites have been included in the New Zealand soccer side seeking to qualify for the Under-17 World Cup in Chile next October.

Wellington Phoenix forward James McGarry and WaiBOP United striker Connor Probert are in the 20-strong line-up for the Oceania qualifying event in Samoa and American Samoa in January.

McGarry is the son of Michael McGarry, while Probert's father is Paul Probert.

A large number of the squad played for Wanderers SC in the ASB Youth League, which finished last weekend, and coach Jose Figueira says that competition was invaluable as preparation.

The Oceania tournament will feature all 11 member nations and Figueira is delighted at the turnout.

"For the region, that's great for football and the growth," he said.

"Historically, New Zealand have always done well at this age group and qualified so, while that always bears on the back of the mind, we know it's not going to be an easy task."

New Zealand open their campaign against Fiji on January 13 and their other group opponents are Samoa, Papua New Guinea, New Caledonia and the Cook Islands.

The final is on January 27.
