Why Did Ron Paul Skip CPAC?

    Paul CPAC

Texas Rep. Ron Paul opted to skip this year's Conservative Political Action Conference, making him the only GOP presidential contender not to put in an appearance at the annual Washington gathering.

Paul's absence is curious considering he has dominated the conference's presidential straw poll for the past two years, but campaign spokesman Gary Howard told Business Insider the candidate opted to skip CPAC to "concentrate on campaigning" -- and perhaps put his supporters to better use:

Howard told Business Insider that the campaign knew that if Paul spoke at the conference this year, his fans would descend on Washington to listen and represent their candidate in the straw poll. With this in mind, the campaign decided that those human resources would be of far greater use in the field, Howard said, where Paul is gearing up to compete in 12 Republican nominating contests over the next few weeks.

But despite Howard's explanation, Business Insider noted, Paul's public schedule over the past several days has been relatively light. As the Washington Post reported on the first day of CPAC Thursday, Paul's campaign said he wouldn't be attending due to "travel constraints" -- even though he had no public events scheduled for the day.

While Rick Santorum, Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich each spoke to the conference Friday, Paul appeared on CNN from his home state of Texas and spoke about the Maine caucuses. He is spending the final day of CPAC in Maine, where he's hoping to extend Romney's losing streak in the state's caucuses Saturday.

"I think we have a very good chance," Paul told caucus-goers Saturday morning, according to the Associated Press. Romney will "be better off if he wins it and I'm going to be a lot better off if I win. So this will give me momentum and it will just maintain his. It's a pretty important state as far as I'm concerned."

As Business Insider noted, Paul's CPAC absence could have the "added benefit" of "quelling tensions between the event's organizers and Paul's staunchly libertarian fan base." Despite sweeping straw poll votes, his vocal support base hasn't yet translated into actual presidential contest wins, and his supporters have previously "raised a ruckus as their views — particularly those on foreign policy — came into conflict with those of the other CPAC attendees."

Paul has also been known to take time off from the campaign trail during some key moments, the Post pointed out: He spent New Year's in Texas ahead of the Iowa caucuses Jan. 3. He ultimately finished third.

      1) Paul's campaign does not have the money of Romney to pay for these diversions.
      2) Paul's support is based on his policies not pandering to the next available audience.
      3) Paul has support within CPAC.
      4) Paul needs to distance himself from the racists invited by CPAC.

Just another example of Paul being different than the rest. Going to these 'two-faced- phoney cocktail parties is only for the crooks. Circle jerk politics is not what Paul is about.

Ron Paul going to the CPAC would have merely given the media another chance to minimize him, despite the fact he would have most likely won the straw poll for the third time.
CPAC is nothing but a bunch of chest beating and Obama hating, little or nothing on the issues themselves. I applaud Dr. Paul for having the sense to concentrate his efforts to restore America on the areas he has the best chance of getting his message out and making a real impact. CPAC was just another venue for media to exert their agenda and continue to try and brainwash the American public. His incredible showing in Maine proves the choice was a good one.

For those who support Ron Paul and plan to write him in if not nominated, be aware many states require that you also write in the name of a delegate as well in order for it to be counted. Check your state's bylaws to protect your vote. GO RON PAUL!

As Ron Paul continues to gain support he knows he needs to distance himself from these incestuous and pointless events. It's about the message -- not the man. Ron Paul 2012. Freedom and Liberty forever!

He was not invited to speak. He won the CPAC straw poll the past 2 years running. The establishment was ok with that as they were'nt election years. Can't allow RP any momentum now.

Ron Paul did not have to go to C-Pac to convince them he is a Conservative they know for a fact he is a Conservative. The voters know he is a Conservative and if the straw poll does not show this then they need to look at him again.

      In response to Michael K:

You are worried that RP supporters will give you a thumbs down. Michael, do you support the FED? Do you support endless taxation for endless social programs and endless waste of our troops? Do you disagree with our troops who support Ron Paul far more than any other candidate? (Don't you suppose they would KNOW who is right about endless wars?). Do you support endless government intrusion in your life? Do you support gun control? (Every other candidate ESPECIALLY Romney and Obama, are VERY anti-gun). Do you really understand how bad Obamacare is (or Romneycare?) This election is too important to be left to people coming on here and saying Ron Paul is kooky and NEVER bothering to find out what he's about.

Ron Paul skipped it because it's nothing but old school GOP establishment now. Sorry, but the reason RP attracts so many young people is because unlike Obama, Romney, Gingrich and Santorum, he is not a tool.

Easiest answer to the headline: He didn't attend because he's a Libertarian playing in the GOP playground. He has a foreign policy agenda that GOP mainstream hates and why would he risk being boo'd in a public forum for the sake of ten voters he may sway. Smart move on his part, really.
      • Libertas 3 mths ago
Did you hear his speech the past two years? I didn't hear any booing.

Why does Yahoo try to smear Ron Paul all day everyday? You scared?

Who is taking the delegates? Who is actually going to win Maine?

      Ron Paul.

In yet another strange twist in this year's voting contests Rick Santorum won all three states Tuesday night. Unfortunately, Missouri's vote was held just for fun. All 70 delegates available were from Colorado and Minnesota. In the two states that mattered, Santorum came in first. Ron Paul came in second and fourth. Mitt Romney came in third and second. And Newt Gingrich came in fourth and third.

What does this mean? It means voters are still unsure of their Republican candidate. No one candidate has put down his footprint and cemented it. Every race is different, and every state is judging the candidates on their own merits and flaws and coming to different conclusions. On Tuesday, the conclusion was Santorum would make a good president. In the next primary, it might be Romney again or Gingrich or Paul.

The only constant in these races is Paul's momentum and message. Paul is doing what he said he was doing to do: Go through the race and build momentum and delegates, and his speech to supporters reiterated those goals.

In fact, it was the most animated I have seen Paul. I also noticed his message has not changed. He has not driven away from liberty and freedom in an effort to garner more votes. He has started elaborating on what he means by liberty and freedom. Paul stated, "The bigger a government gets, the smaller our liberty gets. We are losing our economic liberties as well as our personal liberties."

I don't have to think very long to come up with ways our personal and economic liberties have been compromised. For our personal liberties, we just have to look at the airports, the long security lines and the extensive "no fly" list that includes children, politicians and elderly individuals, and the confiscation of dangerous cupcakes. When it comes to our economic liberties, we just have to look at the unemployment rate, the number of unemployed and underemployed, and the number of people that have fallen out of the middle class.

Paul made a good point when he stated, "Foreign policy is the economic policy. We have extended ourselves too far around the world." Paul also stated at various points during his speech, "There should be no bailouts at all. You can't go to war without a declaration. You can't undermine our privacy any longer." He then referenced Russia and the Cold War by telling us the U.S. never had to fight Russia because Russia overextended itself and caused its own economic collapse. The message was clear. The U.S. is headed down the same path.

I agree. The U.S. is concentrating more efforts overseas than at home, and it needs to stop. We are going to war without declarations of war, and it needs to stop. The U.S. needs to get back on track, and if Paul can bring us back on track, then he should be president. by S.L. Carroll.
