Why Drake’s Wikipedia Page Said He Died Over the Weekend

Allowing users to generate their own content comes with risks. BuzzFeed’s Community section allows anyone to upload content, and a recent article written by a user got so much attention that it ended up on the front page of Yahoo.com. The only problem? The article falsely claimed that Drake died in a car crash over the weekend.

The post has since been removed, and BuzzFeed replaced it with an explanation of their Community section: “This post was created by a user and has not been vetted or endorsed by BuzzFeed’s editorial staff. BuzzFeed Community is a place where anyone can post awesome lists and creations. Learn more or post your buzz!”
But it was too late. For a while, Drake’s official Wikipedia page also said that he was dead. “On November 22, Drake was involved in a fatal car accident that injured two others in Los Angeles,” the Wikipedia page read. “He was pronounced dead on the scene at 9:58 PM.”
Many are attributing the hoax to 4Chan, but the threads in question have been deleted.
