Why Evangelicals Oppose Mormons: Word Games and Fear

COMMENTARY | It is clear that there is bad blood between evangelicals and Mormons, at least from the evangelical side of the street. Mormons say they are Christians; evangelicals say that Mormons are not Christians, as demonstrated by a recent Pew Forum study, and there has been a prominent movement among evangelical leaders to find an alternative to Mitt Romney as the Republican presidential candidate. Indeed, this past fall, a prominent evangelical pastor who backed then-candidate Rick Perry famously proclaimed that the Mormon faith is a cult.

What is up here? Why is there so much opposition from the evangelicals against the Mormons --and not against some other non-evangelical faiths? (Disclosure: I am a practicing Mormon, although I will not be voting for fellow Mormon Mitt Romney's party's candidate in the fall.)

First of all, it is important to understand that Mormons and evangelicals mean very different things when each group labels someone as a "Christian." For Latter-day Saints, popularly called Mormons, a Christian is someone who believes that Christ is the Son of God, the Messiah and Savior of the world-which is precisely what Mormons believe about Jesus Christ. That's basically it.

Mormons understand that different people will understand the Bible-and what it teaches about Christ-in different ways. Although Mormons are famous for their missionary work-this writer's son is currently serving as an LDS missionary in the Baltic States at this very moment-they recognize that different people will believe different things and still be Christian.

On the other hand, evangelical Christians apply a much more narrow definition to the term "Christian." If someone teaches something that evangelicals widely consider to be "unbiblical," then that person is not a Christian for the evangelicals. Of course, this approach begs the questions, "What exactly is 'biblical'? What exactly does the Bible teach?" These are questions about which learned and well-meaning individuals have argued for many centuries. Beyond the well-intentioned, these are also questions about which outright wars have been fought, again, for centuries. There simply is not broad agreement on these issues-yet, if one does not believe as the evangelical Christians do, then to them, that person is not a Christian.

It is this kind of reasoning that allows some evangelicals to claim that Catholics-along with a full one-quarter of the American population-are involved in an unchristian cult.

Secondly, there is an unspoken numbers issue here. The National Council of Churches Yearbook for 2011 reports that, during 2009, the Latter-day Saints in the United States grew in number by 1.42 percent, while the Southern Baptist Convention (which counts many evangelicals among its members) dropped 0.42 percent in membership over the same period. In this context, it would be reasonable to think that evangelicals actually fear losing ground to Mormonism.

So why don't the evangelicals pick on Roman Catholic seekers after the presidential nomination? It should be noted that, according to the same NCC Yearbook, that there are over 68.5 million Roman Catholics in the United States, far larger than any other Christian church, and certainly far larger than the Southern Baptist Convention, at 16.2 million members. Thus, publicly picking fights with Catholic candidates is now a losing strategy in the U.S.

All of this is monumentally un-American. Article VI of the U.S. Constitution forbids the government to impose a religious test as a qualification for office. This is a good policy for ordinary citizens, as well.

how about an article from an evangelical explaning why evangelicals don't like mormons?
      • rrtrack 4 mths ago
It isn't possible for an evangelical to explain it in a cogent manner. All they do is rant and rave and spew lies, half truths and misrepresentations. Bottom line is that there is no reason to trash another religion. If you don't like it, don't practice it, and it should stop there.
      • 007 4 mths ago
Not so...it's not a question of liking or not liking Mormons or anyone else for that matter. Christians object to Mormons calling themselves Christians when they are not. To be a Christian one must accept Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior by believing in their heart that Jesus is the Son of God and confessing with their mouth the Jesus is their Lord of all....this will then cause them to be born-again become a child of God. The biggest problem with Mormons is who they think or claim Jesus is. They say Jesus is A son of God while Christians believe Jesus IS the Son of God. There is a BIG DIFFERENCE here and this is the main reason Christians say tha Mormons are not Christians. Not only are they not Christians but by claiming they are when they are not makes them a cult.
      • mike 4 mths ago
So what is the difference between A son of God and Is the Son of God?
aren't we all God's children, So that make's us His Son or Daughter!
    • Centexan  •  4 mths ago
I have no problem with Romney being a Mormon. I was with the author until the final paragraph. Ordinary citizens can impose any test they want before they vote. The main problem is that a really, really large number of voters don't ever bother to learn much about the candidates for office.

or what God's word actually says...
      • RoseH 4 mths ago
One thing I know to be true, When the man asked Jesus what he must do to be saved, Jesus said, "Believe in Me."
      • RoseH 4 mths ago
but, scripture says, even devils know the son of man... the issue lies in accepting and repenting and believing.... in order to be saved and to achieve eternal life, requires somemind, heart and life changing which is done by the Holy Spirit after you decide Jesus is who he says he is and that he did what he said he did ... dying on the cross for us and then rising... first born, from the dead.... when he left, he said he was going to prepare a place for us.... ANYONE WHO WILL... the only thing we can take with us when we die is our spirit... don't even need a ticket it has already been paid by the Love of Our God for Us... it is us who don't love one another and if we cannot love one another, how can we love God who is reflected in the people around us...

We do love to pick at each other. Thanks for the article and comments it is always good to learn what others believe. Each one of us can believe what we choose to and that is between us and God.
      • Son 4 mths ago
But it does matter whether or not what we believe is true or not. For example, one can believe the earth is square and another can believe the earth is spherical but one belief is inherently fallacious and the other is patently true.

You should research for yourself about Mormonism, and not trust this author. The piece is full of mistruths.
      • Diana 4 mths ago
The thing is if your not a Christian you never get to be with God for anything to be between you and God.

Now I understand why LDS in the west persecute Christians - it's a superiority complex.
      • Mark Koltko-Rivera 4 mths ago
So, Elisabeth, do you have the psychological credentials to talk about a superiority complex, or are you just slinging around the lingo?

And what is this business about the LDS "persecuting Christians"? What specifically are you talking about?
      • Liberty Adamson 4 mths ago
Even lay people know an obvious superiority complex when they see one :-).

we live in a great country( the greatest as far as i'm concerned).the reason for its greatness is its people......ALL ITS PEOPLE......the augrement about mormoms being a cult is really dumb.our constonsution list the freedom of religion right up with freedom of speech.its time to quit tearing each other down and start building each other up...........before someone steps in and does it for us( and i can garuntee you we WON'T like the results). besides, all you have to do is look at the middle-east to see what happens when you give a reglious group political power...............any religious group

First I want to say that I am not a Mitt Romney supporter (I still have hope for Ron Paul). However if someone professes to be a Christian, then they are a Christian and no evangelical extremists have the authority to say that they are not. I know quite a few Mormons and they are everyday normal people. There are good and bad Mormons just like there are good and bad Catholics, Baptists, and members of most other faiths. I myself am a completely different faith and there are good and bad in my faith as well. If one that followed my faith ran for office and I didn't think they were a good choice while a Catholic, for example, was running that I thought was a much better choice, you bet I would vote for the Catholic. Note that I have not said what faith I follow because I don't believe in cramming your personal beliefs down other peoples throats. Religion is a personal choice and has nothing to do with the leadership capabilities of someone.

So in the end, Joseph Smith didn't restore Christianity at all. He invented something that was far less than what it has always been.

proselytizing religions create unrest and I don't like any of them
    • L  •  Chaska, Minnesota  •  4 mths ago
Of course the government must stay out of religion and throwing in the concept of including a religious test for office is purely a red herring or a distraction. However, to say that your religious beliefs cannot impact your personal voting choice or you are "unamerican" is outrageous. Sorry, but you don't get to control other peoople's choices in a voting booth whether you agree with them or not.
    • Dar  •  4 mths ago
I'm with Ron Paul on this one. People might have feelings about the nature of Mormonism, but attacking Romney in this campaign does not address the issues and is promoted by the press.

There are important reasons why Romney should never be President, but his being a Mormon is not one of them

It is easy to worship Jesus.
Is is hard to follow Jesus' teachings.
    • UncleGravy  •  4 mths ago
The church of Joseph Smith - a latter day cult. Doctrines aside, anyone who puts any effort to study the history of this guy knows he was a flim-flam - snake oil salesman. His own family did not believe him and why people choose to follow him in our modern time is curious, at best.
    • WoodysWorld  •  4 mths ago
You forgot MONEY. The LDS church has unpaid clergy. These Evangelicals are afraid of losing their paying congregations to a bunch of people who volunteer their time and talent without cost.
    • marnie  •  Port Orange, Florida  •  4 mths ago
I'd be happy if people would just realize that the United States isn't a church or a corporation.
    • Liberty Adamson  •  Chesapeake Beach, Maryland  •  4 mths ago
No one want to take on that Joseph Smith was cautioned not to join any Christian church because they were wrong doctrinally but now the LDS want to be considered Christian, something Joseph Smith was cautioned not to do? And how that doesn't show a contradiction of faith and values? Or an acquiescence that modern Christians churches are Christian enough to want to be identified with them? Or why wanting to be seen as Christian isn't a slap in the face to the vision of Joseph Smith?

As a Christian, and former Mormon of over 20 years, I oppose Mormonism due to its blatantly satanic doctrines.

SO I bought myself a pair of official Mormon Temple garments (AKA Magic underwear) - What exactly should I expect they will protect me from? No, I am not a follower - does that matter?
