Why iPad Textbooks Are Still Too Expensive for Schools [INFOGRPAHIC]

When Apple announced its initiative to bring iPads into schools and provide textbooks in digital format, the reaction among many was enthusiastic. iPad textbooks are more interactive, they can be easily updated and they can't be easily vandalized. The price Apple announced at their launch event -- $14.99 per textbook -- also sounded like a steal, certainly far cheaper than traditional textbooks. But when you dig into the fixed costs associated with digital textbooks vs. their paper counterparts, there are some major reasons to believe that iPad textbooks might not be coming to a school near you any time soon.

The biggest is that the textbooks themselves don't turn out to be cheaper. A representative of textbook publisher McGraw-Hill made clear to Mashable shortly after Apple's announcement that the functional cost of a digital textbook for a school will actually be the same as the paper version, despite the much lower sticker price. Because of the way iBooks will be linked to specific user accounts, reuse from year-to-year isn't possible; a freshman algebra textbook purchased in 2012 will need to be repurchased for new incoming freshman in 2013. If you use the standard cost and lifespan estimates for paper textbooks of $75 and five years, the digital versions end up costing the same as the paper editions.

So if textbooks cost the same, then going with iPads actually ends up costing schools much more, because of course, the schools need to purchase iPad hardware on top of the textbook software. And that's not a one-time cost -- iPads don't last forever. Apple tends to refresh the device every year, and judging by how poorly my heavily-used, three-year-old iPhone was functioning when I finally upgraded in January, a four-year lifespan is probably a good estimate (if not a little generous). Further, iPads can and do break. Which will cost more to replace, this or this?

The infographic below, created by our friends at Online Teaching Degree, details the costs associated with iPad textbooks versus traditional paper editions. Of course, it is important to note that iPad versions come with numerous tangible benefits that can't be matched by paper books -- they're interactive, they can access the web, they're better for a student's health (carrying one iPad instead of multiple heavy books) and they can be kept up-to-date in real time. However, unless Apple and textbook publishers can come up with ways to greatly reduce the cost -- via things like drastically cheaper iPad hardware, innovative trade-in programs and discount volume licensing for textbooks -- it is unlikely that many schools will be able to absorb the sizable cost increase necessary to get iPads in the classroom.

Wake up people, Apple had never been kind to the general public, they only care how much money they make all these years. I must admit Steve Jobs was a genius and great marketeer for his product, but he had never been an open minded guy. Had Apple ever shared any technical "secret" with any one? While Steve Jobs got the Apple's OS from PARCE and never let other people in, while Bill Gate did the same thing, went to PARCE and got the same knowledge and created Microsoft and make it an open system. The world is much benefited by his move and made him multibillionare and he deserved it. Steve Jobs did some charity according to some report, but compare with Bill Gate that is dismal. After Steve Jobs, Apple will eventually fall to its own dimise. Mark my word. Because Apple is a selfish company no matter how you look at it.

There are so many reasons not to support the use of Apple in schools. One is that when kids get out into the business world they will not be using Apple, they will be using PCs. Two is that Apple is horribly over-priced by itself. Three is that when you combine Apple's love of money with that of the educational reseller and the local school district, you can't support three 800 pound gorillas. I say kick them all out and start over (they are all milking the taxpayer).

I don't understand why students have to refresh Apple device every year. It makes no snse. Apple loves user to refres devices, so it can make more money.. Apple and its supporters claiming APPle has good products. Then iPad should last 5 years (unless students drop on the floor every minute. that is a different story). Also, why Apple is charging a lot money to replace the batteries.
Publishers are also greedy. Don't they save money by not printing the paper. Don't they save warehouse cost and delvery cost. i am very sure publishers can lay off a lot people as more people purchase the digital books. The publishers are not going to pass saving. I love to hear that some people argue adding cost (such as tax, insurance, wage), merchants will pass the cost to consumers. Then how come publishers don't want to pass saving.
Apple wants to make more money by encouraging students/schools to buy iPad every year. I don't think it will work. If it works, it will take away more money from out education system. I

McGraw-Hill has been smoking too much of their own stuff, textbooks last 1 quarter or semester if your lucky and then it's replaced with the same book with a few words changed. I'm glad someone is competing for the textbook industry -- even if its big bad Apple.

Even if the price is the same, think of the children!! Why should kids be burdened with 50 lbs of books to drag back and forth? Anyways, $75 for a textbook? If that is what it costs for college, that would be a steal! Almost 10 years ago I was paying $120 for a book that may only be relevant for a term. And it wasn't the best book to begin with. I would think college kids would be more than happy to pay $15/textbook and not have to wheel a dolly everywhere they go.

Apple / Educational reseller tr0ll This is exactly the problem with the education for-profit industry. It's all about maximizing profits on the backs of the taxpaying public.

Our current educational system is not exactly the best to begin with. If educational reseller provides better value/deal than the "non profit" textbook publishers, isn't this is what capitalism is all about?

May be if Apple can kill more Chinese and creat more pollution in China, then they can sell the iPads Cheaper. personally I think Apple would enjoy put the pictures of Dead workers and accidents in Foxconn plants when the things boots up.
