Why the Keystone XL Pipeline Is a Losing Political Issue for Obama

This story comes from the Yahoo! Contributor Network, where individuals publish their unique perspectives on some of the world’s most popular websites.

COMMENTARY | Lawrence Kudlow, writing in RealClearPolitics, suggests that one of the great issues of the 2012 election in the Keystone XL pipeline. The Republicans have positioned themselves neatly in favor of blue-collar jobs and President Obama against.

As of this writing the Republicans have attached approval of the pipeline, which would run from the Alberta tar sand fields to Texas refineries, in a bill that would extend the payroll tax cut and have dared Obama to veto it. At hazard are 20 thousand jobs in building the pipeline, 100 thousand indirect jobs caused by the pipeline, and the goal of American energy independence.

The reason Obama is in the position of opposing a shovel ready project is his obsession with destroying America's use of fossil fuels and creating an renewable energy economy. That obsession, which has taken on the dimensions of religious mania, has caused the president to do all sorts of inane things. Opposition to the building of the Keystone XL pipeline is just one of the blunders Obama has committed. The Solyndra scandal, resulting from an unwise loan guarantee, stems from Obama's faith based energy policy.

The policy has annoyed a group of people who would ordinarily be in the Democratic coalition, unionized teamsters, plumbers, pipe fitters, and other working class people. The Democrats seem to have recognize this and have decided that tossing the white working class under the bus is an acceptable political maneuver. The New York Times reported recently that the Democrats are cobbling together a coalition that includes upper middle class environmentalists-people who are opposed to the Keystone XL-and does not include the working stiffs who would benefit from building the pipeline.

The Republicans are therefore in the wonderful position of being the party of builders. Any candidate for president that the Republicans nominate will be in favor of building Keystone XL and thus the jobs that will be created. President Obama will be against it and therefore against those jobs.

It was not always so. Part of the popular appeal of Franklin Roosevelt was that he was in favor of building things. Whatever one thought about the stimulus efforts of the New Deal, at least they involved building roads, bridges, dams, and rural electrical power systems. Obama, despite his rhetoric, is in favor of none of these things. He will suffer next year as a result.

AnthonyR....where is the proof that the enviornment is being destroyed??? Just can't say it and think it is true...PROOF????

Energy exploration and development usually leads to such disasters. ie: the BP oil disaster, Pitcher, Oklahoma - Treece Kansas mining ground contamination, Centralia, PA coal fires etc etc etc. I just wonder why all our refineries as few as they are seem to be all down south and without any new refineries being built in the US in over 30 yrs.

It is a ruse ,the republicans in the Midwest don't want it. It will go back to a feasibility study and will get reworked.

Making decisions based upon what they can buy a person politically is not a good way to make decisions for the country. The pipeline will provide NEEDED JOBS and increase oil supplies. We need the energy now. None of us wants to pay 8 dollars a gallon for gas. We should switch to natural gas for commercial trucking too.

This issue is so simple to me....jobs, then people go shopping because they have a job, then employers need to hire more people because of an active consumer...jobs...
I for one love this issue...it so illustrates Obama has no intention of creating jobs

Read my post below, Mary Ann. You live in NO, how will you feel about jobs creation, when your beautiful city is under sea water? Or rather as I pointed out, how evil and short sighted do you think your children will think you are.

Who is this moronic Yahoo contributor for Whittington? Does he actually work for the Republican party, or is it the oil industry? In case anyone reading this doesn't know the facts, practically every scientist in the world is opposed to this pipeline, some saying it will contribute to the growing climate crisis, some saying it might be, in fact the last nail in our planets coffin for an amount of time guaranteeing our children - if anyone survives - will call us a new name. Not, as a previous was called, "The Greatest Generation," but rather, they may call us, "The Evil Generation." Anyone believing the only way to create jobs in this country is to destroy the environment, either has his head up his #$%$ or is the worst kind of fatalist opportunistic cynic. We need to create new jobs and a new future for those who inherit our place in this world, not continue to believe that industrial age fuels and technology will save the day. The same way a couple of hundred years ago people with vision realized that the steam engine was a good thing, not a job destroyer for the sailing vessel building industry. Ah I just read Mr. Whittington's profile and found that alas, he is none of what I said. He is merely a small talent writer, of conservative leanings trying to pull off the stretch of being a political science commentator. And that is why you do your research before you believe everything you read online by a, "Contributing Commentator."

Which Scientists? It takes engineers(which are scientists) to design a pipeline on this scale. By the way Anthony, this is a Midwest issue, not an East Coast, issue, I'm pretty sure that our environmental record here in the Midwest is a little better than New York's. And the Midwest is generally "Red", why is it that the "Blue" states who produce more pollution, tell us in the Midwest about our environment, my electricity comes from a local dam. So I am using Green energy, water is renewablable, and I have solar generators for backup power, where is the power from your computer coming from.

Anthony,if anyone has their head up their butt, it's all the fools who drink Obama's Kool-Aid. It is obvious that Obama has no intention of creating jobs. He has done nothing but make a terrible economy worse since he has been in power. I read somewhere on the Internet that he had the gall to say that his "Stimulous Program" had created three million jobs. Sure they have. I have a bridge for sale.

You never heard of Kudlow? He knows the details and does not lie like you do. your statement about scientist is not true. Its quite the opposite We have been buiding pipelines for over 100 years and guess what, the would is still here. Why dont you educate yourself before you comment.

Comments here please. Has it been decided that the path of the pipeline NOT go throught the Ogallala Aquifer area ? This area should be protected. And why hasn't the United States built more refineries and spread them out strategically around the country. The US has not built any new refineries in over 30 years and during that time half of our refineries have been lost due to catastrophic fires or lack of maintenance.
      • DennisK 5 mths ago
The location of refineries is irrelevant. The underlying issue is opposition to the use of oil sands as a source of petroleum due to the 1 to 2 ratio of energy input versus output to develop them. No matter where the refineries are located, there would be opposition to the pipeline. There is opposition in Canada to sending the oil via pipeline to the Pacific coast. The folks in Alberta would like to build the refineries there for the jobs and royalties but then a pipeline would be needed to ship gasoline.

Where will the oil go when it gets to Texas? (the far east)? Who will fabricate all the pipe? (China, Korea or Taiwan)? Who pays to clean up the spills when inferior foreign pipe fails prematuraly. Just asking?
