Why Ron Paul, graybeard of GOP race, lights up the youth vote

Ron Paul strikes a chord with young voters, who are attracted to his renegade views on foreign policy, the economy, and, yes, marijuana. For some, the very fact that he's so outside the box is the main attraction.

What does the young, 20-something voter see in a senior-citizen Republican presidential candidate with shaggy brows, isolationist views, and an economic policy that predates 1971? Isn't this the same group that helped to sweep Barack Obama into office in 2008?

We're talking about Ron Paul here, the GOP presidential hopeful who has parents scratching their heads as their college-age offspring gush about Mr. Paul's rather singular views (for a politician) on Iran (leave Tehran's ayatollahs alone), the gold standard (go back to it), and marijuana (legalize it), to name a few.

The appeal, in part, is the very fact that the Texas congressman endorses views that are outside the mainstream – and is willing to say what others won't, according to young Paul supporters and college professors who are watching the captivation among their students.

Election 101: Ron Paul sets sights on 2012. Ten things to know about him.

Listen to Stu Lewitz, a third-year English major at Los Angeles Valley College and a Paul backer.

“Everything he says and does comes from a place that is outside the usual Washington-centric mentality, and that’s what this country needs,” he says. “We can’t get out of this mess with the same lame thinking that got us where we are.”

Polls taken as voters headed into the Iowa caucuses on Tuesday confirm that Paul has youth-appeal. Among caucusgoers under 30, 37 percent support Paul, notes Natalie Davis, a political scientist at Birmingham-Southern College in Alabama. HIs support drops to 10 percent among caucusgoers ages 30 to 45.

“College students tend to be anti-establishment,” she says.

Paul is most often characterized as holding libertarian views, and that message of self-reliant independence strongly appeals to young people struggling to emerge from parental control, Professor Davis says. “It says, ‘Just leave me alone, don’t tell me what to do, I will fix it myself,” she says.

Certain of Paul’s specific policy positions also appeal to the young, says Mark Naison, a professor of African American studies and history at Fordham University in New York. He has been tracking Paul’s support among young people involved in the Occupy Wall Street movement. In an e-mail, he points to four. “First, his determination to curtail the power of the Federal Reserve Bank; second, his opposition to US involvement in Mideast wars; third, his opposition to the drug war and the imprisonment of nonviolent drug offenders; and fourth, his opposition to torture, preventive detention of suspected terrorists, and curbs on civil liberties in the name of fighting terrorism.”

However, young people tend to latch onto such Paul positions with little investigation into the candidate's views as a whole, adds Professor Naison. The young people who endorsed them had little sympathy with, or even knowledge of, Paul's renunciation of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, his opposition to Social Security and Medicare, or his intention to dissolve many federal departments, including the Environmental Protection Agency, he says.

Some suggest that one issue alone may be attracting the under-30 crowd to Ron Paul: marijuana.

“No other [major party] candidate advocates the legalization of marijuana,” says Tracy Davis, a Republican strategist and former George H.W. Bush speechwriter, via e-mail. Pot use among college-age youths has risen dramatically, while use of alcohol and cigarettes has decreased, according to recent in-depth studies. The studies go further, suggesting that the trend applies to a larger demographic of young voters – those between 18 and 30, she adds. “This one issue alone has a huge impact on young voters in America today, who would be thrilled to be able to purchase and smoke marijuana without the fear of being arrested,” writes Ms. Davis.

Then there's the economy. Paul’s outsider status appeals to many young college students concerned about the lackluster economy, says John Johannes, a political scientist at Villanova University in Pennsylvania.

“Many are scared, apprehensive, and worried [about what the economy holds for them]. At the same time, they don’t have the same 'stake' in politics and economics that older voters have. The messages coming from the other candidates on what should be done, while anti-Obama, may not resonate with younger voters,” he says via e-mail. Younger voters, no less than older ones, “are tired of ten years of war and military intervention in causes that are less than crystal clear,” he says.

Los Angeles Valley College freshman Shanae Jordan echoes these economic concerns. She likes Ron Paul because she thinks he can take the country back to where it was when a college education didn’t cost so much. She pays $35 per unit of college credit, which is quite affordable, but Ms. Jordan says she has friends on other campuses who are working two jobs to pay for tuition.

“His policies will take us back to when you didn’t have to save so much or sacrifice so hard just to get through school,” says the foreign language major.

As for whether Paul can parlay this youthful support into greater political power, Birmingham-Southern's Professor Davis says it’s not likely. “The overall youth vote is largely Democratic, and Paul’s support doesn’t work well with working-class youth,” she says. His support among the young, she adds, “is a college thing.”

I'm 55 and he has my vote. I just hate that a lot of the media just want to portray Ron Paul's support base as young college kids. To me that's just their way of "reporting" that they want others to think RP is not to be taken serious since young people support him. Screw the media, Ron Paul 2012!

"they want others to think RP is not to be taken serious since young people support him. Screw the media, Ron Paul 2012!"

It's young people who will be affected the most in the long term by the 2012 presidential race as THEY ARE the future of America....We need to right the wrong so that they enjoy the same economic prosperity that we did in our youth and wisely they must vote just as you are sir....America belongs to you....Not poLIEticians.

Ron Paul does not advocate the legalization of marijuana on a federal level, he advocates the right of the States to do so without federal interference. There are over a dozen states that alreadly provide legal marijuana to patients. The Feds should not come into the States and arrest law abiding sick people or anyone else for using an herb that has been proven to help people with pain and many other ailments. Polls show 50% support the right of the people to use marijuana. California is set to legalize it in the next election. The rest of the right-wing anti-marijuana extremists who want to control what you eat, drink, smoke and who can sleep with or marry are out of touch with the God given human spirit to be free.

“College students tend to be anti-establishment,” .... most of the country is "anti-establishment" right now. And rightfully so. The only people who are not, they are the "establishment." Like the writers of this rag article. I'm 56.... and guess what.... RON PAUL 2012 !!!
    • Dreamtime  •  4 mths ago
Even if Ron Paul doesn't make it this time, he's getting the message out. Someone will carry the torch after he's gone (maybe his son). The fact that the youth of America backs Paul now means that next time around the number will grow and whoever took his place will win. In inevitable.
    • Eric P  •  4 mths ago
Ron Paul will repeal NAFTA, bring the troops home, end foreign aid, restructure our job market, end the IRS and Federal reserve. He is doing everything that is right for this country and right for the people. Our military has the most superior technology, nobody can get within 3500 miles of us without us knowing about it, that is a fact. The government and media will lead you to believe it is a national security risk, and that is just a scare tactic and excuse to continue big government spending. The Roman Empire fell because they were spread too thin and could not sustain it economically!

Where to begin with yet another poorly researched propoganda piece published by Yahoo?

First of all, RP isn't in favor of legalization of marijuana, he's in favor of letting the states decide it for themselves just as they do the death penalty. THAT'S THE WAY IT SHOULD BE.

Second of all, his ideas aren't outside of the mainstream, his ideas are a reflection of how the country SHOULD be run. I'm almost 50 and I was taught economics, foreign policy, and the role of government in the exact way that RP so eloquently states it.

Third of all, who in their right mind is in favor of Medicare? If SS were run right then it would be one thing but Medicare is a complete, total and utter failure that has never and will never work, not even for old people. Only the old geezers who live and die by FDR and his failed socialist new deal garbage and those dependant on the great society programs of LBJ are really in favor of these kinds of programs.

Fourth, we have been able to contain threats from countries in the past without the wars. The Iran drumbeat is just the war-mongers and those who profit from war preparing you for more. Iran is no more a threat than Pakistan or North Korea, in fact they're less of one. The USSR was contained when they had 30000 nuclear weapons and Iran doesn't even have ONE so stop the propoganda or send your own to die for "freedom".

Lastly, Ron Paul resonates with young people and others of sane mind because he's THE only candidate who actually gets it. The rest are tools for the corporate and banking elite. They'll give you anything you want and spend the country into oblivion if you just let them continue to let them play their dirty games in the biggest playground in the world. The problem lies not in those who agree and support Paul, but with those who don't. They are the true brainwashed sheople.

When are people going to realize that just because a person is elected it doesn't mean all the things he or she promotes are going to happen. We need someone like Ron Paul in office because he won't just go along with congress on either side. That is why the republicans in congress don't want him in office. He won't just fall in line.
    • watchdog  •  4 mths ago
I'm 50 and I will be voting for Ron Paul....One reason is because I have a child in college who will be graduating soon and I would like to see my childs future America return to prosperity......Ron Paul will do what is right for America....How do I know this???

      Rand Paul.....Think about it.
    • Ilona  •  4 mths ago
Because Ron Paul wants this country to get back to the founding principles that made it the greatest country in the world, what is wrong with that.
    • Jennifer  •  4 mths ago
Note to the author--it's not just the college kids supporting him--I'm 41 and have been following Ron Paul for quite a while. He's the only one who isn't afraid to speak the truth, even when it goes against his own party--THAT'S why people like him.
    • Epicurus  •  4 mths ago
To call Ron Paul an isolationist because he does not want our military spread out all over the world launching missiles indiscriminately at countries with whom we have a beef is akin to calling someone anti-social who doesn't punch their neighbor in the mouth when the neighbor's dog #$%$ in their yard. Most of us would have a conversation with the neighbor about the dog, however, the U.S. has decided in far to many circumstances that we are not going to have that conversation but rather stand in our neighbor's yard and threaten them with a gun (literally will not have a conversation with the other country). So a man who supports free trade, open travel, reduced tariffs and regulations, all to promote economic well-being and international exchange is an isolationist because he does not want the U.S. military out in the world undermining the promise and potential of free trade, open travel, reduced tariffs and regulations, and increased economic well-being the world over. I guess the word "isolationist" has a different meaning than I was taught. Apparently it doesn't mean a desire not to engage the world, but rather, according to the media, it a means a desire not to blow things up (or punch your neighbor in the mouth, if you will).

In essence what younger generations like with Ron Paul is the limitations of government. For too long politicians have created crazy laws that should not have been created.

Think about it, seatbelt laws. What are you doing wrong by not wearing a seatbelt? Sure the percentages of survival from crashes go up, as well as injuries go down, but what are you physically doing wrong with not wearing a seatbelt? Same goes with helmet laws for motorcyclists. What are you doing wrong without wearing a helmet? Both of these laws were created by government to help insurance companies not have to pay all the medical expenses for when people do get injured. They were suppose to keep insurance cost down, but ironically didn’t.

Same goes with all the drug laws. What are people physically doing wrong? It’s their choice to or not to do drugs. The only person you are harming is yourself. There shouldn’t be laws sending someone to jail over smoking pot. That is their choice.

Now for the harsh reality with Ron Paul. Sure he promises a lot of things, but like Obama I don’t see him coming through on his promises. I live out and the country and one of Obama’s promises was affordable high speed internet everywhere, haven’t seen that one yet. It’s no fault of Ron Paul’s or even Obama’s for that matter. The problem lies with Congress and the Senate. Do you honestly think Ron Paul is going to be able to pass a bill legalizing Marijuana through both the House and the Senate? How about do you think he’s going to be able to pass a law putting us back on the Gold Standard? All that would happen is these Bills would be submitted and the House and Senate will fight and argue over them till the Bill gets so watered down it is insignificant, or it just plan gets rejected.

I personally like about 60% of what Ron Paul is talking about. It’s the other 40% that concerns me. The Gold Standard does not work, that’s why we went off of it. We can’t pull all our foreign aid and troops from the world; isolated nations don’t work in today’s global markets. Shrinking government sounds good, until you realize they don’t meet that much to begin with. Most people argue that we need to make politician only work part time, fyi they already do. We need to make them actually show up would be a better argument. They represent States and Districts; there should never be an empty seat when Congress and Senate are in session.

This all seems like an episode of Twilight Zone. I keep hoping that we get a strong leader for this country and that things will change, but then I get drove right back down to reality that no matter who you vote for President, Congress and the Senate will always screw with whatever plan they had in mind.

Those who call Ron Paul an isolationist invariably refer to the obvious international "threats" of WWII (Hitler and Japan). They are curiously silent about what evil the United States feared when it entered the Great War (WWI for all those whose history starts at WWII).
    • Kevin Miller  •  4 mths ago
As Ron Paul lives, reads, understands and vote for the U.S. Constitution. There is NOTHING MORE CONSERVATIVE than that. To say he is radical or revolutionary is oxymoronical VOTE RON PAUL.
    • r2d2  •  4 mths ago
Johannes calls this a lackluster economy. That is and understatement of massive porportions. We are in deep deficit doodoo and the paper money with nothing of value backing it is not a new phenomenon. As George Washington was fighting a war for independence the unbacked by anything paper Continental dollar lost all value until it hit zero (see page 308 The Real George Washington for a quick summary-or study on the reason the Constitution authorized Congress to COIN money). Surprise, but you didn't know that was in there. Read...learn... the Declaration and Constitution are YOURS. These are your legacy. We want to leave you with LIBERTY. YOU are the PEOPLE. This is what Ron Paul teaches us.

I am 58 and I support Ron Paul. This is because he is the only one who has plain common sense, and is not afraid to "tell it like it is" when all the other candidates repeat the same phrases over and over, "family values" etc without bothering to specify, as well as "defense of the country" What we need defense from is the economy, as well as STUPIDITY.
