Why We Unfriend People on Facebook

A newly release chart from Nielsen shows the most common reasons we friend -- and more importantly, unfriend -- people on Facebook. The No. 1 reason anyone sends anyone else a friend request is obvious: they know the person IRL. But our reasons for performing that online sacrilege that is unfriending are of course juicier. Most of those surveyed (55 percent) say they have unfriended someone because of "offensive comments" they have made, followed by not knowing the friend well enough at 44 percent. The most of rest of the reasons come down to our once online friends being just too damn annoying: "depressing comments," "trying to sell me something," "political comments," "don't like their friends,"  "update profile too often," etc etc. "Research suggests that real world interactions drive online friendships," writes Nielsen Media Research on its blog. But it's weird to assume otherwise. Yes, our online interactions are just as legit than those in fleshspace. Someone always being a Debby Downer, or having irritating friends, or incessantly politicizing have always been reasons for cutting a friendship. Now with Facebook there's a convenient catalogue of friends we can take people on and off of that surveyors can ask you about.

Facebook has truly revealed how unmannerly and stupid the people you know are. I've deleted several people from it. It's astonishing how many people you know are completely brain dead, intolerant idiots. "Why you on Facebook all the time?" Unfriended. "Why you posting all these news stories all the time?" Bye! "Why are you on here all the time?" Why are you keeping tabs on me? Click, unfriended. Tried to warn one person about this charity and the people that ran it, and the idiot unfriended me and sent me a nasty message. Goddamn people are stupid. My only friends are the people I like now and who like me for who I am. I want to delete more, but I just can't. Most of my current friends have been vetted over time and share my passions. The idiots have been weeded out.

Facebook is a scheme by the govt. to keep tabs on you! Big Brother knows what you wore today, what you ate today, how you feel today, and most importantly where you are at anytime you are on Facebook... Boycott Facebook!

If Dino is going to write for an organization, then Dino should learn to write according to the rules of English. The writer's above paragraph is filled with errors, dropped words, poor choice of words, etc. Amazing that someone would work in communications, but cannot write.

Thank you! I thought it was just me. I had to re-read that last sentence a couple of times to figure out what he was saying.

If you spend a lot of time on social networks you may want to read up on sociopathy. It will save you a lot of grief.

I agree with the depressing comments..IRL someone says something depressing, you talk it out and then move on...on Facebook the comment stares at you every time you log on.
      • Patricia P 5 mths ago
Just delete the comment or hide the post. That's what I do with stuff that I don't want to have to keep looking at.

I hate it when I log into my facebook, and see "Your friend John/Jane Doe has completed X achievement in XXXXXX Game. Click here to claim some of the rewards." showing up 30 times in a row on my news feed, followed by same news from a different friend showing up another 30 times... Until I started blocking apps (mostly from zynga, go figure) from posting on my wall.

Yep, you can block the games. It's a good idea, that way you see the real feeds and not the game play.

We all have that one friend who needs to check their fb like every five minutes, respond to every post on their wall or they give their opinions on everything. Dino I strongly recommend Strunk & White and don't call youself a writer. Do you happen to be friends with Chris Chase?

I unfriend anyone that shares a link to 'Free" tickets, ipad, iphone, toaster oven, anything at all. If I want something, I will buy one. I am not interested in some hustle advertising gimick.

Dino, I can barely get past the grammar to appreciate the article. I agree with Katheren_Ann...Proofread!

This article is a surprise. I've never seen any evidence of conflict or disharmony on the Internet.

Because we quit playing Farmville and other games that required you to add strangers to advance in the games. Zynga, etc. need to get off FB and create their own website. Those game posts annoy non-game players and it's information overload, especially for those who do play. At least create a separate wall for the games. I do not want 2 years of game posts as part of the new "TimeLine" -- it is too tedious/ time-consuming to delete hundreds of game posts individually. The new layout looks like clutter even without game posts.

Where you type in a friend's name, you should just be able to type in a date or combo of week/month/year like a calendar to bring up posts and be able to customize who on your friends list is allowed to scroll through your past this way. It would be much more streamlined instead of this junk mess.

And FB needs to stop announcing every action we take minute by minute on that stupid ticker. Where is the opt-out? Not just delete after the fact. Maybe we don't want everyone in our friends list to know we are on FB and be left alone. Why must we see so much from non-mutual friends? Stop suggesting who to add and let me decide who I show and hide in my friends list and from each other if I so choose.

Wow, this article was so terribly written. I would guess that English is not the writer's first language. And that makes me wonder why Yahoo keeps posting this crap. Hire a real writer, for pity's sake.

Facebook was a lot of fun back in the old days when I was free to be one of the annoying posters and rant during my PMS sprees and had hundreds of friends but now that I'm older and in a successful, loving relationship and be an adult I have to rant in journals now. Honestly, I prefer it that way. I look like less of an #$%$ I should hope.

This is like the 50th time I've seen someone write an article about this. When tech writers have nothing else to write about, they put up a trivial facebook article.

Dino Grandoni - the author of this most exhilirating article, has a bright future ahead of herself writing on stuff like this. Am sure those protesting in Eygpt have found a truce in order to celebrate this most magnificent masterpeice of jounerlism!

wow there studies are so off base that i read them just to get a laugh they do these studies on the dumbest people on the planet and even worse they believe the lies they tell em i get a big big kick out of seeing how wrong they are about this stuff no one friends them because they now them and they don't unfriend them for all the reasons but one they mentioned i know 30 people the has friended people they never meet are even live in the same state as them and they unfriend them because they just flat out don't know the person as for me i don't even friend people unless i know them are unless i wanna get to know them and even then when they dont talk to me i unfriend them... so as far as i see it there study is make believe they take there thoughts and project them as the world's opinions about like the government thinking they know what americans what are feel.
