Something that I have not seen talked about here is that, along with not throwing a punch, the victim here was nearly fifty, while the assailant is a football coach in his thirties. That alone should have caused any educator and coach with any intelligence, decorum, or sense of fair play to stand down, unless there was an actual need for legitimate self defense. If I ever observe a thirty year old football coach trying to fight with a senior, the so called coach is going to have serious problems.

The "black man in a yellow shirt" comment sounds like he was giving a description. It is not in anyway racist, and I now question if Massie was trying to, or was going to, report him for an incident that occurred in the bathroom and Hawkins punched him for "snitching". In any case, Hawkins threw the first and only punch, so will never be able to use "self defense" as justification. Glad that hot head is away from kids.

"Defending himself" and he threw the ONLY punch? Something don't smell right. When only one punch is thrown, that is the first physical contact and it is called offense, not defense, otherwise known as battery. This guy is easily chargeable with manslaughter. He threw the first punch and killed a guy because of it. Despicable. He was probably very drunk when he threw the punch, too. He should be in the slammer, now. Am I wrong?

I'm guessing a jury will take one look at that mugshot and vote to convict. Not suppose to have a smurk like that on your face right after you've killed a fellow American. It was probably over something he misinterpreted considering the victim had his hands in his pockets and had walked away. Sounds like Hawkins was a bit drunk and crazy. The guy from Utah probably won't even have a blood alcohol reading due to being a Mormon (this is all just speculation but then again, I thought they'd convict Casey Anthony)

Self defense is when you fight back when someone is attacking you, not making vulgar comments. Also, I don't believe its murder more like manslaughter.

Hawkins is a MURDERER. That is what he was arrested for. There were TONS of witnesses, and it was completely video recorded by the casino. Vegas DOES NOT put up with this violent, evil behavior. The race card does not work here, especially with TONS of witnesses and a video tape that is providing the TRUTH. It doesn't matter what all the reasons were that lead to the fatal altercation; if you kill someone and someone is dead due to your hands, whatever the intentions, then you are guilty of murder. Plain and simple. Self defense is a real stretch here, since the dead man didn’t physically threaten the would-be murderer. Mere words are not a good or justifiable reason to physically strike someone. Hasn’t the murderer heard of the childhood axiom: “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me”?
