GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) — The wife of an ex-aide to John Edwards is expected to retake the witness stand for a second day of grilling from a defense lawyer for the former presidential candidate.
Cheri Young faced tough questions Monday about whether she had any incentive to lie to hurt Edwards, who has pleaded not guilty to charges related to nearly $1 million solicited from two wealthy campaign supporters used to help hide the married Democrat's pregnant mistress as he sought the White House in 2008.
Young mostly deflected attempts to impugn her credibility by painting Edwards as the liar. She testified earlier that the candidate asked her husband to issue a statement falsely claiming paternity of his child. Edwards' lawyer countered with documents showing the Youngs spent donors' money to build their dream home.
