Wikileaks: Does Bradley Manning deserve a Nobel Peace Prize?

Icelandic lawmakers nominate the accused secret spiller — reigniting a debate over whether Manning aided the world, or aided the enemy

Three members of the Icelandic parliament have nominated accused WikiLeaks informant Army Pfc. Bradley Manning for the 2012 Nobel Peace Prize. Manning allegedly put 250,000 Department of State diplomatic cables, Department of Defense gun camera videos, and other classified documents onto CD-RWs, and sent them to WikiLeaks, which posted them online for all to see. The Icelandic politicians say Manning, who is being court-martialed for aiding the enemy, did the world a favor by exposing America's "long history of corruption, war crimes, and imperialism." Does Manning really deserve a medal?

Manning deserves this award: "Bradley Manning is a hero," not a criminal, says Brian Sonenstein at Salem-News.com. If he really did leak these documents, which helped catalyze the Arab Spring by exposing "official corruption and brutality in countries like Tunisia, Egypt, Libya and Syria," then there are truly "few individuals who have made as great a contribution to justice and peace." And because of his "unjust treatment," there are "even fewer who have had to pay for it the way he has."
"Tell the Nobel Committee: Award Bradley Manning the 2012 Peace Prize"

Manning's boosters are ignoring the facts: The Icelandic lawmakers's choice "shows a deep ignorance of what Manning stands accused of," says Ron Capps at TIME. Manning's alleged leaks "put the lives of American service members, diplomats, and citizens at greater risk." The Nobel Peace Prize is meant for someone who fosters "fraternity between nations" — not "betraying an oath and putting the lives of your countrymen and their sources in grave danger."
    "The Nobel betrayal prize"

The irony is just too much: The Nobel Peace Prize already has "a rotting fish reputation" thanks to its often-dubious nominations, says Jazz Shaw at Hot Air. Manning's nod makes the stench unbearable. Manning supposedly deserves the prize because he exposed "war crimes" in Iraq and has endured heroic suffering behind bars. But his backers fail to mention that the 2009 Nobel winner, President Obama, is the one ultimately responsible for Manning's ostensibly "horrible treatment." The prize is now officially a joke.
"Super. Bradley Manning for the (wait for it...) Nobel Peace Prize"

The nobel prize has become more of a demonstration of hate and intolerance than the honorable prize established by Alfred Nobel. Much like an oscar, or emmy or pulitzer, it has lost its luster.

When it was awarded to obummer, an absolute liar and utter failure, there was no hope for it to recover it's past standing....

Oh yes, the Arab Spring has turned out to be such a breath of fresh air, people all over North Africa are breathing deeply the sweet breeze of freedom, oh wait, from todays headlines: Ongoing torture in Libya of black Africans, legal proceedings against a TV station for showing a film in Tunisia, students in Egypt force a halt in production of a TV show as they don't approve of the clothing. Yes indeed a giant step forward. Thank God for Manning...and NATO.

He probably deserves a Nobel Prize as much as Obama did.
      • Robert 3 mths ago
That's only because Obama didn't deserve it either, as I'm sure HE would agree.

The Nobel prize that is an absolute joke is the Nobel Prize for Economics. Maybe they should start handing out prizes for astrology or palm reading?? They have the same level of truthiness as economics does. :) Maybe they just need to bring some unemployed math majors into astrology and palm reading to add a more scientific look to them. With heaping dollops of math formulas added they will have to be considered sciences just like economics!

Winners of the Nobel PEACE Prize:

      Yasser Arafat
      Al-Sadat
      Jimmy Carter
      Kofi Annan
      Al Gore
      Barack Obama

In other words, a group of morons. I guess he is in the right crowd.

A peace prize huh? Since when is betraying your Country and putting the live's of your fellow soilders on danger worthy of a Peace Prize? Oh no this coward deserves nothing more then a tall tree and a short piece of rope.

That would put the final nail in the coffin of the Nobel Peace Prize. It's already the Nobel Political Prize, so we may as well give it to someone like Manning. I'd like everyone who thinks he's a hero to consider their own lives and their own jobs. Is there never anything between individuals that would be damaging if all your family, friends or coworkers knew? The same is true for businesses, states, and countries. People are the glue that hold countries together, and people dealing with people is sometimes difficult and messy. There needs to be a certain level of discretion exercised or it just doesn't work. Manning is a criminal, and he will be found guilty. The main reason most other countries' governments were fairly understanding about the revelations is that they knew if their own dirty laundry were aired, the results would be worse.

Bradley Manning deserves, but won't get, the death penalty for "Treason in time of war"; if he is convicted. Irregardless of his supposed confusion over his sexual identity, or any personal demons he might have, he is a soldier. He fully knew his duty, where his loyalties show be, and also knew what what he was doing was very wrong. You can't have lower ranking enlisted personnel personally deciding whether classified information should be made public for all the world to know.

It's NOW officially a joke???! Anyone remember AL GORE getting this prize for his fear-mongering propaganda??

The pfc was in the military...there specific channels that can be taken to direct such things and actions...what he did was incorrect and wrong.
What I want to know is how and why this guy was able to copy and release such...his LT/Captain or whoever above him and the individual/s who allowed him to view such without proper search of recordable material should be on the carpet as well!
'Harms way'...who became 'in great danger' from what he did...individuals or the corrupt nations themselves? Did he place the US in physical danger...anyone who works with the 'undercover' world of liars and thieves are in 'harms way'. Most diplomats already have a 'get out of jail card'. Did this guy actually 'injure' someone or just open the eyes of all those who thought what was happening.
Should he be sentenced...Yes, as a soldier. That is for his superiors to decide. Everyone already knew how governments and those at the top are nothing but liars and corrupt individuals...soooo.
No way on the peace prize...

If Obama got one for killing thousands of Arabs, then sure, give Manning one. At least he hasn't killed anyone.

He released a video to Wikileaks ...who then edited out all scenes showing the journalist conversing and TRAVELLING with insurgents who had just shot a Humvee with an RPG,
pay attention to the time stamp (which Wikileaks deliberately blurred) and you can see it jump ahead about 20 times during the 10 minute video.

      Thats called "Propoganda"

Wikileaks also published data that help the Taliban identify people who were cooperating with American troops...because of the primitive conditions in Afghanistan we don't know how many were killed.

      Thats called "Treason".

If you're an American and you think this guy is a hero...you're just clueless.

Actually the term "clueless" only hints at your condition, but yahoo frowns upon the words that do accurately describe where , exactly , your head resides.
