Wikipedia to Go Dark on Wednesday

It's been speculated, and now it's confirmed: Wikipedia plans to give its users a (severe) taste of the Internet under SOPA by going offline in protest of the bill on Wednesday. Last week Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wiles wondered aloud in a statement if the site should coordinate a shutdown with Reddit planned for this Wednesday, January 18, to register its disgust with the much-maligned Internet censorship bill. And today we see Wales tweeting sly confirmation the massive online encyclopedia will indeed go dark.

We're glad to see a hat tip to Wikipedia's most loyal users! That suggests something else too: unlike Reddit users, who you'd expect to be anti-SOPA partisans anyways, a Wikipedia blackout will make site's more passive users very aware of the bill's existence when they lose access to that repertoire of knowledge that is Wikipedia. Wales writes that Wikipedian consensus is currently for a 24-hour shutdown of the site's English-language versions globally. So beside out inner Internet deviant enjoying seeing Wikipedia officially go anti-SOPA, we appreciate the decidedly Wikipedian way the site made the decision to go dark: with a "Wikipedia talk" forum you can read for yourself here. As Wales writes, it was a community decision.

Its funny how everyone posting here is negative, when SOPA has the potential to severely limit your ability to post comments. Sites will have fear you may post copyrighted materials, and therefore will not allow people to comment on news articles, which is something I enjoy.

SOPA is a disaster. It's the first step in a long term communcations and free speech coup.

People it is not about Wikipedia, it is about your free speech. Wikipedia is making a point about something that could affect things such as Ebay, Craigslist, Yahoo etc. etc.

It is against the First ammendment. And guess whose party promoted and pushed it. On our way to a dictatorship without a Constitution.

Look at the big picture, guys. Wikipedia is merely making a point about what censorship is going to mean for all of us. They are protesting, and in driving that point across, hopefully, we all will wake up. Everybody can be 'aware,' but until it affects you directly, nobody wants to become involved. So, don't "wah wah wah" over Wiki's actions - they're not doing it to punish users; they are trying to wake us up as to what it'll mean if the internet censorship goes through! No, I don't use Wiki even on a weekly basis, but I support their message!

And it's done so record companies can make that extra buck. Lame.

It has been stated throughout the centuries that if a government wanted to truly manipulate control over a people, it starts with free speech. Take away people's ability to criticize the information provided them and they have to accept everything that's thrown at them through any kind of press materials. Then, take away the right to protect oneself through the ownership of firearms of any kind.

We would like to think that civil liberties have been chiseled away at only in recent decades of US History. The reality is, since the inception of the Civil War and Manifest Destiny, we have been living with a limited sense of civil liberties for well over a century. In a nation that is not very old, taking in a global historical perspective, now is the time to really not only work on protecting the civil liberties currently in jeopardy, but also reassessing those that have been stripped away and have been considered non-essential for a while now. The more we allow our civil liberties to be pulled out from under us, the less safe we are as a nation--particularly from those who are bound to lead us into a totalitarian system.

Don't think it's possible? Think I'm taking it too far? Look at Europe in World War II. Most nations that became dictatorships had their leaders elected into office and then allowed their own personal fears to justify the stripping of civil liberties. Protect your free speech! Protect all rights endowed by the first ten Amendments of the US Constitution. Don't allow censorship to entirely control every keystroke on your computer or phone conversation between friends.

If you're that concerned about information on the web, censor your own children! Be the ones responsible for checking out websites before you allow your children to utilize them. And like any good high school teacher or college professor would say: Wikipedia does not count for a credible/reliable source for citation purposes! Wait 'til the Library of Congress is censored as well!

      Argh!

An admirable effort but certainly not enough! For proper effect, and to truly show people the impact SOPA might have, ALL sites that would be affected should go dark for at least A WEEK! THEN watch all of you up in arms because you can't access your faves! That'll get you all moving to write congress and state your opposition to this abominable attempt at outright censure of the internet. Are we becoming China?

Any measure that has a chilling effect on free speech and free exchange of ideas is dangerous. Period. This effort has been non-partisan and on-going for years. A pox on this silliness. The horse is long out of the barn.

And we point fingers at the Chinese for censorship? where is this country headed to? Our freedoms keep getting eroded piece by piece until we have none. Our government keeps getting more powers by scaring the people into surrendering them. What ever happened to the "government of the people by the people"?

More than one day may have a larger impact, I like Wikipedia, I could live without it for a few days to raise awareness of SOPA.
