Wikipedia, Google protest US antipiracy proposals

NEW YORK (AP) — January 18 is a date that will live in ignorance, as Wikipedia started a 24-hour blackout of its English-language articles, joining other sites in a protest of pending U.S. legislation aimed at shutting down sites that share pirated movies and other content.

Reddit.com shut down its social news service for 12 hours. Other sites made their views clear without cutting off surfers. Google blacked out the logo on its home page, directing surfers to a page where they could add their names to a petition against the bills.

Local listings site Craigslist took a middle route, changing its local home pages to a black screen directing users to an anti-legislation page. After 10 seconds, a link to the main site appears on the home page, but some surfers missed that and were fooled into thinking the whole site was blacked out.

The Internet companies are concerned that the Stop Online Piracy Act in the House and the Protect Intellectual Property Act under consideration in the Senate, if passed, could be used to target legitimate sites where users share content.

The 24-hour Wikipedia blackout is an unprecedented move for the online encyclopedia. The decision was reached after polling the community of contributors, but dissenters say political advocacy undermines the site's mission as a neutral source.

However, it's not complete: the block can be bypassed by changing browser settings to disable JavaScript, or by using the version of the site designed for cellphone screens.

There's also a "mirror" or copy, of Wikipedia called The Free Dictionary, but it's not up to date.

Where's the law to keep congress from stealing from me?

I hate income tax season I always have to pay a couple of grand back... its like the system rewards people who have too many kids. RON PAUL 2012

        It's called the FAIR TAX.

        Good post, bro.
    • Androgenoide  •  4 mths ago
The law is a blunt instrument. As long as it has to apply to everyone, even a well written law will sometimes be wrong and even a poorly written one may sometimes get it right. This law, written with the pretext of restricting the theft of property, is actually more likely to be used as a powerful censorship tool. If you like the Suppression of Liberties Act you'll love this one.

yes it is like durning last debate romney say he for ndaa bill but he would not abuse power. ha do you trust him with that authority?
      • JanetK 4 mths ago
Scary times people. Ron Paul is this countries only hope. He does not support in anyway the loss of freedoms to citizens.
      • Androgenoide 4 mths ago
JanetK, yes Ron Paul has a lot of things right and if he runs on a third party ticket I'll probably vote for him but his platform is problematical in some ways too. For example, he's so afraid of socialism that he doesn't believe corporatism is a problem at all. I think both extremes are dangerous. Then too, trying to return to the gold standard might very well devalue our money more than the fed ever could. It sounds good but I don't think it's well considered.

How about making laws to charge FEES from all companies posting their adds on our home TV screens and internet browsers without our approval or consent.
      • L. Riki Cheever 4 mths ago
I was thinking the same thing...

We could also insist upon them not being on the internet and if they generate sales, the providers get a percentage; we can also have a sales limit. We could aid small businesses.

You see, we do not exist simply to take orders.

We exist to help make those already corrupted honest through our ability and inclusion as one of the governments (and big businesses) checks and balances.

        Thank you Founders!
      • BarbaraS 4 mths ago
You said it! If the Internet is muzzled we lose our new found power to fight back against unfair practices and corrupt career politicians,
      • Androgenoide 4 mths ago
Those ads on your TV pay to bring you the programs you want. It doesn't have to be like that, of course... you could always pay a license fee to the government for the right to have a TV and then the government could choose the programs instead of the corporations. That's been done in some countries. another alternative would be to pay a subscription fee to get the programs you want... kind of expensive but somewhere along the line someone has to pay for the services.

These bills are nothing more than the Music and Movie industries trying to past the cost of fighting piracy on to the American people so they can keep more of their millions.

Make no mistake about this, any Laws passed in the US mean nothing to the international community and 90% of all pirate sites are not based in the USA which means that these laws will not stop anything at all. They will how ever allow the US government to control what websites American's can access and what websites American's cannot access. NO THANK YOU.

The internet is the last place with truly free speech and personal freedoms, do you really want the US government to control it?
      • Martin 4 mths ago
If you live in the US, they will stop morons like you from accessing those sites and if they deal with banks in the US, those banks will pay dearly.

We know that China rips everything off from the US but we don't see it so we turn a blind eye. Now, if China install camera's that you could access from the internet, we would be having a different discussion.
      • Tony 4 mths ago
@Martin - What is to stop the government from blocking anti government sites? Social media sites? Gaming sites? Once this door is open there is not telling how far it will go. We both know we cannot trust our government with anything and least of all the last truely free space we have left in this once great country, the internet.

Also if you would read the bill instead of listening to others, you would understand that all it takes to get a website blacked listed is a few reports of it using or having copy righted stuff and boom blacked listed, no evidence need to get a site black listed.

Also why should the US tax payer have to pay to fight online piracy for the Billion dollar Movie and Music industries? Do you really think we can afford to pay more money for stuff that those industries should be doing on their own? When did it become the governments job to protect the Movie and Music industries?

You should learn the facts before you talk to the adults, now go run and play while the grow ups talk.
      • Martin 4 mths ago
We, the people, who live in a free country is what is stopping our country.
This is why we are not Syria protesting our government and congress.
The OWS movement, while having a few people problems, are protesting peacefully and within the law usually.
Civilized countries behave with civility while others have no regard.
That's what separates us from them. Because of that, 535 people know they work for us.

Not much I can do about except for voting against any Senator or Representative that votes yes on this. Especially the authors of the bills. Hollywood just makes crappy movies and sound studios make crappy music. That is why you all are not making any money you morons! Stop trying to sue your way out of you current financial situation. Like what Apple is currently doing in Europe. Make a better product and people won't pirate it, they will buy it you idiots!
    • charlie  •  Poplar Bluff, Missouri  •  4 mths ago
Hollywood should be happy for the pirates at least that way someone will watch their stupid movies in that most Americans are too BROKE to pay the box office admission these days
    • deborah  •  4 mths ago
About time someone stood up for rights even though its self interest. At least this time someone had money and power to fight back.
    • Linda  •  4 mths ago
We need to stop Congress from giving themselves raises every year, and full pensions with medical benefits from day 1. What a joke!
    • ComnSens  •  Morton Grove, Illinois  •  4 mths ago
I fully support the rights of artists being able to have some protection of their work, and the right to profit from it, but this law does not appear to be a reasonable way of dealing with piracy.
    • Justin  •  4 mths ago
"pending U.S. legislation aimed at shutting down sites that share pirated movies and other content."

Or, legislation aimed at stifling free speech, honest journalism, and exchange of ideas, masquerading as that which would put a stop to online piracy (but which would actually fail to do so).
    • PictiW  •  4 mths ago
Keep it up its working Rubio(an original sponsor of the bill) has now flipped and is against it, more Congress Critters are supporting the protest against SOPA-PIPA.
    • James  •  4 mths ago
We already have enough laws to handle piracy; (remember Napster ?) We MUST fight to keep big Government, their lobbyists, and the industries that have bought and paid for them OUT OF OUR LIVES!
    • DavidD  •  San Antonio, Texas  •  4 mths ago
You might consider sending something like this to your representatives in congress:

I oppose SOPA and PIPA as an unnecessary and irresponsible expansion of government power. We already have more than sufficient laws on the books to control intellectual piracy.

The effect of these bills would be the same as suggesting that we should prosecute gunmakers because a criminal used a gun to kill someone.

My greatest concern, however, is the inevitable unforseen and unintended consequences in these bills. There is no doubt in my mind that unscrupulous lawyers, businesses and politicians will use these bills to limit free speech, unfairly reduce competition and censor the free flow of ideas.
    • Yahoo censorship  •  4 mths ago
I guess the media blackout of Ron Paul is some sort of SOPA beta testing then, right?
    • psunami  •  4 mths ago
censorship of the internet is simply another grab at our quickly deteriorating human rights in this country...there is a system already available to the victims in this crime...its the u.s. courts. Why should the entertainment industry be afforded special treatment, if someone steals from you, do you get a special law passed that will protect you...no. The government has NO business censoring the internet, and these bills are designed to give more government control over its subjects.
    • Mark  •  Fairfield, California  •  4 mths ago
The goals of SOPA and PIPA is so that we can be like North Korea, Iran and any country that can censor their information. We go around and ridicule other countries for censoring their internet access and information, yet here we are our own government is working on the same.
    • Lucy  •  Collinsville, Illinois  •  4 mths ago
We really need to fire congress and hire people that work for U.S. citizens instead of their corporate paymasters.
    • Courtier  •  Dallas, Texas  •  4 mths ago
      People Should Know:
SOPA and PIPA is all about Protecting the Corporate Media, Censorship and Controlling the News Outlets.
It is hiding behind Piracy Act. etc.
    • Donald A. G  •  Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania  •  4 mths ago
This is not America. There are some who do piracy of copy righted materials. But in comparison it is not as really staggering as it seems. But this is a major plan to infringe upon the majority of the people. It will not stop at this if it is allowed to pass. We are not under a nation controlled by regime's. Take the people's Freedoms from them they will only have one recourse. And it will not be pleasant. And any politician who favors such legislation. Needs to be unemployed at the end of this year.
