Wild girls of the food world make no apologies

MIAMI BEACH, Florida (AP) โ€” The foul-mouthed, self-proclaimed wild girls of the food world are making no apologies for their success.

Alex Guarnaschelli, Gabrielle Hamilton, Debi Mazar and Nadia G have all become big names in culinary circles thanks, in no small part, to their naughty-yet-nice personalities. And on Saturday they used their loud-and-proud voices to vent during a panel discussion at the South Beach Wine and Food Festival.

Being a woman in an industry dominated by men is not easy, they said.

"There are tons of women working in the industry. It's the fact that they are not getting recognized in the same way as men," said Hamilton, author of the brash food world memoir "Blood, Bones & Butter" and owner of Prune restaurant in New York. "They are not in executive chef positions. They don't get funding for restaurants."

Guarnaschelli and Hamilton are both trained chefs who have received accolades from critics and peers. Mazar and Nadia G made waves when their cooking shows went viral, all while wearing heels.

"Who started cooking?" Nadia G of Cooking Channel's "Bitchin Kitchen" jokingly asked. "I grew up with women in the kitchen who taught me everything I know, from pasta to how to live my life. It's great that guys are good cooks, but honestly we all know where it started and who fed us. And it's the ladies in the house."

Some of the women said they choose this profession out of a passion for cooking. Guarnaschelli, though, chose it "because I'm angry."

"If I want to make a giant tub of tartar sauce and throw it on the floor and yell that it's horrible, or I want to make crab cakes like a psycho, or if I just want to cook a whole side of beef, well I'm going to do that," she said. "And that kind of ability to take all the bad and good energy and direct it at something and create and cook it and cut it up, hell yeah. Sign me up, girl or not."

Mazar, who is known for her role on HBO's "Entourage" as press agent Shauna Roberts, hosts Cooking Channel's "Extra Virgin" with her Italian husband. She said panelists Guarnaschelli and Hamilton receive more credit in the industry "since they're not wearing heels" in the kitchen.

A successful women blabbing that she doesn't get recognized like men. Whine, whine. Geesh lady, work for a bank, work for a department store, a call center. I've worked for plenty of places where women are more than 75% of the workforce. I didn't get much recognition either. Do I need to go on TV to complain too?
      • Becca 3 mths ago
Statistically speaking, you probably got paid more to be as insignificant and average as you just proved yourself to be. It was a poorly written article, that doesn't mean they're whiny or don't have a point.

If you can cook well, does it really matter whether you're a girl or a guy? The answer: NO. This is one field where gender shouldn't matter, it's all about ability and talent. If you've got the gift, it should be pretty obvious.
      • Del Rose 3 mths ago
True, but politics does play a huge role in the kitchens also. Paula Deen, Rachel Ray, and the rest of the ilks on the Food Network should be proof of that.

I am sensing a gender arguement but something needs to be said for when females start adopting more male traits and then they break into sucess and respect
      • A Yahoo! User 3 mths ago
Unfortunately, Del, you make a valid point.

The egos continue to roll......All you need to be on TV today is a good body and an obnoxious attitude.
      • Carl Bruschnig 3 mths ago
A good body is just optional nowadays.

don't sound like very likeable women to me, eat something and shut up
      • JH 3 mths ago
Carl and Bob just proved the point as to why gender bias is still an issue.

I always thought that fine dining and social graces went hand in hand. Cooking is not a contact sport. I don't want to eat in Hell's kitchen. The Epicurian world needs another class act like Julia Child.
      • JH 3 mths ago
There is a world of difference between the kitchen and the dining room. Some chefs have grace, tact, and talent. Some do not. Not all CEOs are good public speakers - which is why they hire PR people. It's the same thing. And yes - cooking is a contact sport. There is butchering, blood, fire, heavy lifting and much, much more that goes on to make a perfect little plate.

I just saw Nadia G earlier. I like what she cooks but don't care for the gangsta stuff, she should stick with just cooking.

As a Sous Chef the past five years I've worked with a number of male and female cooks, they both do well and work well together.

It's all and act. It's a real good show and funny.

She does some real interesting stuff. But she is a little heavy on the accent. It starts to get on your nerves after a bit. Also, I'm originally from Brooklyn myself so I know.

I didn't learn how to cook until I moved out of the country, I had to learn all the basics (no more boxes and mixes, too expensive! Gotta do it from scratch to keep within the budget!). And you know what? I discovered that I am a pretty darn good cook. It's not about the gender, either--once I managed to entice hubby into the kitchen, he blossomed. Now, we both cook, and we both love it. Cooking is an art form. My food is a way to show my love for the people I'm feeding. It's not about gender!!

I have pretty much quit watching Food Network. Stupid coooking contests with more stupid rules. Give someone a side of beef to cook in 20 minutes (then say it is kind of tough...Really?), peanut butter and eggplant in the dessert round, etc. Just stupid. And some of the contestants, where do they find these egotistical idiots.
Really sick of anyone cooking "cajun" style, I'm from Louisiana and I can tell you, they don't know the difference between creole and cajun. Emeril is one of the worst.

The best cook, male, female or transgender is one who concocts something edible and creative good from what is in my kitchen. Even an idiot can come up with something if he has sea bass, lobster, shrimp, filet mignon, pork chops and unpronounceable herbs and condiments to work with.
