CONIFER, Colo. (AP) — Authorities are racing to contain a destructive wildfire in the mountains outside of Denver before the return of hot and windy weather this weekend.
More than 500 firefighters are at the blaze Thursday in the mostly rural area southwest of the city's populated suburbs, which are not under threat.
Since the fire began Monday, 27 homes have been damaged or destroyed, and an elderly couple was found dead in one of the homes. No cause of death has been released.
A woman also remains missing in the fire area, which spans 6 square miles.
The residents of about 900 homes were evacuated as the strong winds quickly spread the fire. Evacuees are only allowed back to homes for 30 minutes with an escort.
