Willow the Cat and Other Pets Who Survived Long Journeys

Missing Calico Found 2,000 Miles from Home 5 Years Later

This story comes from the Yahoo! Contributor Network, where individuals publish their unique perspectives on some of the world’s most popular websites.

Willow the cat has been in the media spotlight this week after she was found in New York City, nearly 2,000 miles and five years after she went missing from her home in Boulder, Colo. Willow was reunited with her family Thursday while she was a guest on the Anderson Cooper show in New York.

It's an incredible story with a happy ending, and it's unlikely we'll ever find out how this adventurous cat made her way from the mountains of Colorado to the skyscrapers of the Big Apple. It was fortunate that her owners back in the Rocky Mountain state had her microchipped as a kitten; her family would have forever thought their calico kitty met with a tragic ending.

As it was, a man in Manhattan found her wandering the streets and brought her into the animal shelter where they were able to identify the wayward cat and contact the Squire family in Boulder. But what happened all of those years? Did Willow travel all the way to the city to become a big star, or did she just decide to become a wandering kitty? We'll probably never know.

It makes me wonder about all the other missing cats that don't have any identification. How many miles have other felines journeyed that we're unaware of?

My favorite Disney film of all time is "Incredible Journey," the story of two dogs and a cat who travel hundreds of miles through the Canadian wilderness, facing many dangerous obstacles along the way and ultimately making it back home to their owners and a happy reunion. The story of animals traveling long distances isn't just a tale; it's real for Willow, and there are other stories like hers.

    Other Real-Life "Incredible Journeys"

A dachshund named Tootsie went missing from his family's yard in Pleasantville, N.J., when he was just six months old. His family thought they would never see him again but, because of a microchip, he was discovered in Pittsburgh on the streets five years and 360 miles later and returned home.

A Florida dog, Max the Maltese, was found 1,200 miles away from his West Palm Beach home all the way in Chicago after having been missed for several months, according to The Associated Press.

In the United Kingdom, a cat named Sampson traveled 500 miles from Midlothian, Scotland, all the way to Plymouth in the southwest of England. The tabby was missing for over a year before his owner, Linda Jansen, received a phone call that he'd been found.

Willow's story might take the prize for the longest and most arduous journey yet. Though she is getting her 15 minutes of fame now, she will likely be a star in her family's home for many years to come. If only she could talk -- imagine the crazy adventures she would have to tell.

we adopted a dog from our local shelter. she came to VA from NC because the shelter there couldn't house any more animals. Every time we walked her, she wanted to go up a certian street. she would stop pull & whine. After several months a woman jumped out of her car on the corner of this street & asked about the dog. Come to find out Colby belonged to this woman's sister in NC. Every time the sister came to visit Colby came along. All Colby wanted to do was visit her "aunt" at her home on that street. I always wonder if Colby thought her old owners were there waiting for her. Small world!

So did they prosecute the owners for allowing their pet to roam free and escape? We need microchiping so we can catch those pets who kill endanger species and bring their owners to justice.

From news accounts, the cat ran out of the house when some workmen were going in and out and didn't make sure the door was closed.

Statements like, "It was fortunate that her owners back in the Rocky Mountain state had her micro-chipped as a kitten." and "It makes me wonder about all the other missing cats that don't have any identification." is implying that animals should be micro-chipped. But what about when they want to microchip people? People should never be micro-chipped. The dangers far out-weigh any advantage. I suspect that these stories are being promoted as a pretense to trying to micro-chip people. Just look at how people are being treated at the airports. And now the football games.

Well, sorry to tell you, but I am the writer and in no way would be for people being micro-chipped, and in fact, although I understand this with animals, I've not done that with my own. He is always near us and it isn't an issue anyway. I am a freelance writer and this article is no way in connection with anything but the happiness I felt that the animals were returned home to their owners.

Word got out several years back that the elitist group-The Bilderberg Group had a goal of seeing everyone in the U.S. microchipped by 2017. They were going to use a false flag event. Like have those in Homeland Security say that their were white terrorists (blonde hair and blue eye) working with terrorist organizations. The new profile. Therefore it would be justifiable for everyone to get microchipped.

I don't have a problem with animal microchipping, but I am leery of what will be next- just like you. I am afraid the were are heading in that direction (human micro- chipping). The signs are all around us. It will be a scary new world we would be living in. God help us!

Heard plenty about microchipping and how it is so helpful in locating your pet should he/she ever get lost (or stolen) and end up in a shelter. I am wondering about GPS tracking. Does anyone have GPS collar for their dog or cat? Have you ever used it to locate your lost dog or cat? Does it work well enough? Do you highly recommend it? Would love to hear from you.

I am feline so very happy for Willow and for her family that thought they'd never see her again. God bless that kind man who had the sense to bring Willow to the shelter. He has some great karma coming his way!

This cat was stolen and that is how it made its trek. It either escaped or was let-go ib New York and miraculously rescued and ID'd. But it was stolen I am convinced.

If this cat could talk, it would have some pretty amazing stories to tell.
    • Lilianne  •  8 mths ago
My guess is someone stole this cat and just recently dumped it on the street. Glad the owners got it back, it is a cutie. I am seeing more and more cats and dogs wandering the streets and by the highways because people are dumping them either because they cannot take care of them anymore or just don't want them anymore. This is heartless and unnecessary. Take them to a shelter rather than leaving them out to be brutally killed.

Sixty-five years ago, my pug went missing, when a nasty neighbor cut his leash !
He was gone for 4 years, and I had no reason to believe I would ever see him again.

One day, I walked past my Scoutmaster's house, only 8 blocks away, and heard a commotion, coming from the backyard. I went to look, and Puggy had gone nuts, when he heard or smelled me. I went in to the house, and told the Scoutmaster, that was my dog,
lost for 4 years ! He asked me if I had any proof ! I said, "Ya mean besides how
the dog is behaving ? " I pulled a picture of Puggy out of my wallet. And the
Scoutmaster let me take him home. I felt sorry for his kids, but I had my dog back.
BTW, the neighbor had a conniption fit, when I brought Puggy home, because
she said he barked too much !!! We had the dog for another 5 years, much to
      neighbor's chagrin ! :)

Good story, Scout's kids should get another from the shelter.

Horrible neighbor. Glad you got your dog back.
      • M. L. 8 mths ago
Hope you made a recording of the dog barking so after he passed away you could play it and still drive your neighbor nuts.

Not all that surprising. I got a cat that had been found in a truck that came all the way from New York to Ventura, CA. It was a kitten then, and no one knew how it got on the truck. But my neighbor, who found her, took her to the vet and got her treated, and when he brought her home she decided she liked us better. (We had other cats) and moved in. This was many years ago, before microchips. But Bandit was a tough, independent tortoiseshell that always spoke her mind.
