For Microsoft, the primary goal of Windows 10 isto createmore personal computing, and to do that, it is making the OS available as a free upgrade for the first year. This applies to both Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 users, as well as Windows Phone 8.1 devices. Windows 10 will offer a common store for downloading applications on phones, PCs, and tablets.

Windows 10focuseson three key areas. According to Terry Myerson, executive VP of Microsoft's operating system group, the first key area is the mobility of experience. In other words, you should be able to pick up where you left off on another device.

The second area is trust. Microsoft wants to put the customer in control. The third area is natural interactions. This includes voice, pen, gestures and even your gaze. As part of this effort, Microsoft's personal digital assistant, Cortana, will be heading to the desktop. You'll be able to ask pretty much anything and get personalized responses.

Microsoft has already received a lot of feedback on Windows 10 from its Windows Insider program. The companysays that 1.7 million people have signed up to shape Windows 10, installing it more than 3 million times. Users haveshared 800K pieces of feedback on more than 200K topics.

As Myerson stated, over time Windows will evolve as as a service. "What version are you running" conversations will cease to make sense.
