Winehouse's mother: 'She seemed out of it'

LONDON (AP) — Amy Winehouse's mother said the singer seemed unwell a day before she died, a British newspaper reported Sunday, while her family mourned the loss of "a wonderful daughter, sister, niece" and more tributes flowed in from fans and fellow performers.

A mound of flowers, messages and handwritten notes grew Sunday outside of the north London home where ambulance crews found the singer dead before they arrived on Saturday.

"R.I.P. Never Forgotten," read one message, while another said "It's all right, love. Go now."

The Sunday Mirror quoted Janis Winehouse as saying she believed it was "only a matter of time" before her daughter died. The 27-year-old singer had publicly struggled with drug and alcohol abuse for years.

"She seemed out of it. But her passing so suddenly still hasn't hit me," Janis told the tabloid.

Police said the cause of her death is being treated as "unexplained," rejecting speculation that she died from a drug overdose as "inappropriate." The circumstances surrounding her death are not yet clear, but police said a post-mortem is expected Monday or Tuesday.

Her spokesman, Chris Goodman, confirmed Sunday that a security guard had found her body and called ambulance services.

"Our family has been left bereft by the loss of Amy, a wonderful daughter, sister, niece. She leaves a gaping hole in our lives," the family of the "Back to Black" singer said in a statement, and requested privacy.

In her short lifetime, Winehouse too often made headlines because of drug and alcohol abuse, eating disorders, destructive relationships and abortive performances.

Actor Russell Brand, a former drug addict, wrote a lengthy tribute to Winehouse, urging the media and public to change the way addiction is perceived — "not as a crime or a romantic affectation but as a disease that will kill."

"Winehouse and I shared an affliction, the disease of addiction," he wrote. "Addiction is a serious disease; it will end with jail, mental institutions or death."

Others, like American singer Carole King, whose song Will You Love Me Tomorrow was covered by Winehouse, recalled her small, but powerful body of recorded music.

"She did such a beautiful performance on it," King told the BBC, saying that she was grateful to the late singer for the recording. "I just really hope that she's found peace now wherever she is."

No information about funeral or burial was immediately available.

Wasn't she manic depressive or Bi-polar? She admitted to not taking medicine for it, seems to be that contributed greatly, people tend to self-med with drugs and alcohol. Please don't judge her, Mental illness is a #$%$

        uhm, manic-depressive, bipolar, same thing.
      • Steve 10 mths ago
My dad is manic depressive and he has never taken a drug for it in life.
      • Emery 10 mths ago
Bi-polar is another name for manic depressive, and it's way over-diagnosed. There are also conditions which present at bi-polar, even when a person isn't truly-bi-polar. If medications don't work for bi-polar, then you probably have something else. Of course you have to take them, but some of them make you feel even worse. I speak from experience, having a child with problems like this. "Mental illness" is a brain chemistry issue, anyway, so it's physiological, just like cancer. But medical science just doesn't know how to treat it yet.

It's amazing how no one will say "No" to an addict if there's money to be made. Awful shame...

        alcohol..a most dangerous drug......

It's easy to blame the mom. Amy Winehouse was an adult and her mom could not force her to do anything such as get rid of friends that may want her to stay high or to go into rehab.

Yes we can.......she raised her and Amy became the result of her nurturing years or lack of it. Bad or stupid parents raise bad or stupid children.

B.S. Don. Not 100% of the time. Some overcome it, and as an adult it is her job to get over it or at least make progress. A little responsibility goes a long way.

Don's parents must have been really stupid.

Talent, fame and money do not equate with Happiness and contentment. I've never heard of anyone finding peace through drinking or drugs. Maybe some perception once or twice, but it is No answer to your pain. That being said .May your soul find peace Amy.

actually amy was an addict long before fame and money.

Do you'll understand what a chemical imbalance is?
      • Steve 10 mths ago
A"chemical imbalance" is the farce created by the mental health profession to pump you full of drugs to satisfy their masters in big pharma. In the old days, shrinks use to real work on you and get to the root of your depression. Now, they edicate you with happy pills. Idiots How do they know you have a chemical imbalance if they don't scan your brain...IDIOTS!!!

This just proves that money does not buy happiness...it just buys more drugs. You can't buy real friends or love. She must of felt hopelessly lonely and was probably in a lot of pain. This world is a cold place, hopefully she is in a better one now.

So sad. I won't get involved in the blame game.

I don't think any addict thinks they will be an addict when they start. Once they become one it's very hard to get off. Most never do. It's doing it the first time that is the problem. Most of us have someone in our lives that has or had this problem. Be it a relitive or friend. It not only destroys the person that is the addict but also the people that love them. I have been told by someone that has battled the demon that the drug is a devil.

This is quite PAINFUL...people's lives have worth and value, in spite of the problems and difficulties they may have. I do NOT exaggerate. This TRULY hurts. I sincerely hope she now has the peace she could not find in life.

The article states, "Ambulance crews called to her home in north London's Camden area Saturday afternoon found the singer dead before they arrived." How did they find her dead BEFORE they arrived? Conspiracy theorists will have a field day with this one.

Personal comment: I was not a fan, but I have daughters only a coupe of years younger than Ms. Winehouse was, so I am saddened, though unfortunately not surprised, by the death of this young, troubled woman.
    • wife of a DP  •  10 mths ago
You can criticize her addictions & weaknesses but at the end of the day remember she was someone's daughter, their baby. They once marveled at her first steps and I am sure they were devastated by their helplessness to keep her from slowly killing herself as an adult. She was truly very, very talented. Her parents should be proud. Not all of us can beat our demons.

27 years old, so young, and I heard on the news that Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin ,Jim Morrison, and now Amy Winehouse all died in thier 27th year.
    • Lee Putnam  •  10 mths ago
Stating that she died of an overdose isn't "inappropriate", but it might be premature. We all know about her lifestyle and battle with addiction. An overdose is probable.

Still, very sad when a person passes so young. God bless her and her family.

There's no such thing as a "former" drug addict. You never overcome addiction; you can only hope to keep it at bay.
    • awesome  •  10 mths ago
I did drugs for years, and never did them because my mother didn't hug me,or my father beat me.I did drugs because they made me FEEL GOOD!.When I tired of the lifestyle, I quit. If Amy was mentally disturbed, the last thing she needed was street drugs.
    • Mr. B  •  10 mths ago
What a wasted talent. But to have lived like that was her choice.

Let us not judge her please.
    • Kathleen  •  10 mths ago
Amy was an adult woman of 27 years of age. Sorry, but you can't keep blaming Mom for your own bad choices. RIP, Amy. You will be missed!

''she seemed out of it", ... she was not herself?!

"Ambulance crews called to her home in north London's Camden area Saturday afternoon found the singer dead before they arrived."

That is a talented ambulance crew, able to find her dead before they arrive.

After reading some of these comments people are making a bout her drug addiction is rather annoying. Yes,she was on drugs and yes she said no to rehab, but you never knew her personally, honestly the ones saying "Oh she deserved it." No,she didn't no one ever deserves to die. That is the most horrible thing to say I have lost so many people and let me tell you it hurts everyday so you can only imagine what the family and friends are going through. Amy,may you find peace now and your mind at ease. At least you are away from the idiotic world of human stupidity.
