Winnipeg Jets trade Alex Ponikarovsky to New Jersey Devils for two draft picks

WINNIPEG - Forward Alex Ponikarovsky was traded by the Winnipeg Jets on Wednesday to the New Jersey Devils for two draft picks.

The Jets will receive a 2013 seventh-round draft pick and a 2014 fourth-round pick in exchange for Ponikarovsky.

The 32-year-old left winger signed with Winnipeg as a free agent in the off-season, agreeing to a one-year deal worth US$1.8 million. He had two goals in 12 games with the Jets.

Ponikarovsky has played in 648 career NHL games between the Toronto Maple Leafs, Pittsburgh Penguins, Los Angeles Kings, Carolina Hurricanes, New Jersey and Winnipeg. He has 137 goals and 179 assists in that span.

Ponikarovsky returns to the Devils where he played 33 games during the 2011-12 season with seven goals and 11 assists.

He was originally selected by Toronto in the fourth round — 87th overall — in the 1998 NHL Draft.
