How Wireless Carriers and Manufacturers Screw Up Android

COMMENTARY | Google recently unveiled its new Android design guidelines, which are meant to help people develop apps for its open-source smartphone and tablet operating system. The guidelines work in tandem with Android Ice Cream Sandwich's visual overhaul, which was designed to "enchant" smartphone and tablet users in a way that Android's previous, bare-bones iterations, did not.

Aside from the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, though -- which, as a Nexus phone, is largely staying true to the spirit of Android's design -- you wouldn't know it to look at some of the Ice Cream Sandwich phones coming out now.

One step forward, two steps back

That's how Cameron Summerson of Android Police describes HTC Sense 4 on Android Ice Cream Sandwich.

HTC Sense is one of many manufacturer customizations layered on top of the Android OS, ostensibly designed to improve the user experience. As the owner of an HTC Android phone, I've spoken highly of it in the past. When Android was just a framework for apps and widgets and overlays, with little or no personality of its own, it made "sense" for a manufacturer that cared about good design to overhaul Android's interface.

On Android Ice Cream Sandwich, however, it largely feels redundant, or even regressive. Worse, it throws away a substantial amount of work that Google put in to making a spectacular mobile OS. HTC Sense may be shiny, but it has its own separate design guidelines for app developers to remember, which look nothing like the ones for Ice Cream Sandwich's "Holo" interface. And partly because of that, HTC's apps look like they were designed for an entirely different phone.

Being different for the sake of being different

You can argue that this is less the case for HTC than it is for other Android smartphone manufacturers. HTC Sense has a lot of fans, myself among them, for its spectacular widgets and (internally, at least) consistent design.

But the wireless carriers don't want to stock rows of smartphones that all look and feel the same. Which is one reason why Samsung has Touchwiz, and Motorola has Motoblur, neither of which have approached quite the same level of fan acclaim (or tastefulness) that HTC Sense has. On top of that, the carriers themselves intervene in each phone's development, insisting on branded apps that duplicate Google or Android apps' functionality. Or memory hogs like Sprint ID, which ostensibly make it easy to customize your phone but in reality "drain patience and processing power," according to CNet's Jessica Dolcourt.

Google has the clout to occasionally get its hardware partners, like Samsung, to make pure Android smartphones in the Nexus series. These have less non-uninstallable "crapware" and less clutter getting in the way of Android's full Holo experience. But most manufacturers are at the mercy of the carriers ... and aren't so good at software engineering or user interface design, besides.

The market should decide what they want. If you don't like what a manufacturer is doing, don't buy their phone. Personally, I bought the Galaxy Nexus. And this has nothing to do with anything, but boy that T-Mobile girl is hot.

They need to learn the KISS principal, "Keep it Simple Stupid". A lot of nerds haven't learned that. That's why most ordinary people can only use the most basic functions of their cell phones. Although it's good time killer while your waiting in the Dr's office or the airport terminal to try to figure out all the features.

In software terms, simple usually equals less versatile. Versatility is one of the selling points people don't necessarily think about but are drawn to. Android phones are more versatile than iPhones which are more versatile than a flip phone.

In the meantime I'll go get me a real ice-cream sandwich.

This article couldn't make less sense to me. I don't understand any of this jargon.

Exactly! Most folks could care less about 3G or 4G, they just want a phone that makes calls. The carriers and the manufacturers want to create a new market every year to force customers into buying the latest product and of course signing a new 2 year contract.
If you must, you can buy a 3G phone on e-bay relatively cheap and add it to your service without signing a new contract. But the carrier and manufacturers don't want you to do this.

By the way there are no 4G standards. So technically "4G" doesn't exist.

"Which is one reason why Samsung has Touchwiz, and Motorola has Motoblur,"

First, who in their right mind wants to touch "wiz". And secondly who wants a "blurry" product, or is Motorola trying to blur the consumers vision when deciding on a product?

Frankly there are too many choices and none of them are very good. If you are a 1%'er you can spend $6K to $50K on a diamond encrusted phone that works just as bad as everybody else's. Frankly for that kind of money I would want a phone that gets dial tone everywhere and has hi fidelity audio and no lag.

I guess I'm just old-fashioned? I have NO idea what LTE stands for, what HTC stands for, what 3G or 4G even means, what a Holo is, and I have NO desire to know what a 'spectacular widget' is unless it's something my girlfriend can do to me that I haven't discovered yet. I have a crappy old flip phone that makes calls and sends and receives texts. I guess I'll continue to save my $60 extra a month and hold off on this smart phone stuff until at the very least someone can explain this stuff to me..

Against my better sense, I bought my college age son 3G service at 30 bucks a month. His usage is nowhere near the limit, yet the next cheaper plan is a tiny amount of data/month. A text messaging plan is extra! The carriers are out to gouge data users. Personally I have an iPod touch with wifi and a Motorola Razr (the old 1.5 Generation flip. I don't see the need for a 3G/4G phone when I can usually snag some free wifi signal here and there. Once i sent e-mail from an unprotected residential router I found cruising down the street.
