Wis. couple accused of starving infant daughter

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A Wisconsin couple who were worried that their infant daughter would become obese starved her for months, causing the girl to gain just 5 pounds in the 14 months after her birth, prosecutors allege.

Christopher and Mary Sultze, of Appleton, were each charged this month with a felony count of child neglect, and each faces up to a year in prison and a $25,000 fine if convicted.

Christopher Sultze, 35, appeared in Outagamie County Circuit Court on Thursday and was released from jail on bond on the condition that, among other things, he'd have no contact with the child. His preliminary hearing was rescheduled for next week.

Mary Sultze, 36, waived her right to a preliminary hearing Wednesday in exchange for her release on bond so that she could tend to her other three children, said her attorney, Brandt Swardenski. She, too, was ordered to have no contact with the daughter she's accused of starving.

    Neither has entered a plea.

"I have serious reservations about whether there's any criminal activity here or just misguided parenting intentions," Swardenski said. "This is a case where we need to reserve judgment until we learn more details on exactly what occurred."

Christopher Sultze's attorney, Michael Petersen, declined to comment.

According to the criminal complaint, the couple's daughter weighed slightly more than 8 pounds when she was born in July 2010 and weighed just 13 pounds this past September. A doctor told police the girl would have to weigh 22 pounds to even appear on the growth charts for her age. Another physician noted that the child had no subcutaneous fat on her body and was essentially starving.

Doctors began tracking the girl's lack of growth and weight gain at her four-month checkup in November 2010, when she weighed just 7 pounds, 9 ounces.

Her parents began to grow irritated that doctors were continually concerned about her weight, the complaint said. They insisted they were feeding her enough, and said their other children grew slowly and that they believed the girl would eventually gain weight.

Months went by with no significant improvement and tests for potential medical problems came back negative. In August, the family's doctor convinced the Sultzes to admit the girl to Children's Hospital of Fox Valley for an evaluation, investigators said.

The girl gained 8 ounces over a day at the hospital, but a social worker assigned to the family as part of the admittance process noted that the girl's parents were upset by recommendations that they needed to feed her more calories and said they wanted to take their daughter home, against the advice of her doctors.

According to the complaint, Christopher Sultze told a doctor he didn't want to have obese children and he kept insisting the girl would "get fat" at the hospital.

He later told police and another social worker that his family follows a very low cholesterol diet. He said he underwent bypass surgery for a blocked artery when he was 25 years old.

Court records show that Mary Sultze was charged in 2009 with misdemeanor battery and disorderly conduct for biting her four-year-old daughter on the arm. According to the criminal complaint in that case, she told police she bit her daughter to teach her a lesson after the girl bit her older sister. Mary Sultze acknowledged that "it probably wasn't right to do."

She ultimately pleaded no contest to the disorderly conduct charge, which is not an admission of guilt but is treated as such for sentencing purposes. Prosecutors dismissed the battery count.

Appleton, a city of about 70,000, is 125 miles northeast of Madison.

Ok, can someone explain to me the backwards thinking of our courts and child protectives services that says a parent cannot have contact with one child but is perfectly capable to tending to her other 3??? Why have the other 3 not been put in protective custody. It always amazes me when the courts take one child away but not others.

Like you said, it's backwards thinking. I work in a mental health clinic and it's not uncommon for me to see a twenty-something year old with a new baby who tells me she's had four or five previous kids taken by the state. The state can't take the new one until he or she is abused or neglected. Sad.

But she bit one of them prior to this... what are they waiting for???

As a person who works with social services and has seen many cases, i would suggest that there is more to this story than we are reading. I read the investigations all of the time and you would not believe how many parents can raise three kids one way and do something totally different with another child. Sometimes it is mental illness, or depression, and others they read something that they trust and do something they would not normally do because of it. Think back to Spock and how many people tried to raise their kids without ever correcting them. And other nonsense that he taught. What the parents did was 120 % wrong and was abusive, but I have a ton of questions to ask before I would pass judgment. I saw one case like this and it was because the wife got pregnant from an affair and the man she had the affair with was fat, so they used skim milk and vegatbles, and no meat, no bread, etc. But the child was not so severely deprived. It turned out the wife feared her husband and he wanted the child to suffer. they had other kids and they were treated well. In fact it was one of the kids who turned her parents in.

Mama sure don't look like she's missed a meal lately.
      • Hechter 6 mths ago
Probably hasn't exercised in 10 years either.

Just because one is obese doesn't mean that they can't lose it, you just need to work at it.

Wow, how quickly some Americans throw their Freedoms and Liberties in the trash to make a sarcastic point on a webpage.

It's called "Innocent until proven guilty", and the fact that we follow this is what means you are Free from wrongful imprisonment.

Everyone deserves a fair trial. Sorry, our society has not degraded down the point that a single, angry, webpage poster gets to decide the judicial fate of someone accused of committing a crime........yet. When it does, you guys can sit behind your computers and commit people to prison sentences all day if you like, but for now, we're still Free. So sorry about your Freedom and Liberty, I'm sure they can't go quick enough for you.

Starving a newborn ?? How can anybody pressume a baby will be obese and at what age will it be safe to feed this child food that is not going to cause obesity !! This poor baby insn't even fully developed , How sad to be so misinformed and she has other children, I can only imagine how underweight they are. I hope we don't read about this baby in the papers next week with the headlines " BABY STARVED TO DEATH". How can child services even consider returning her back to her parents, they aren't exactly thin. Who knows what kind of growth impairment they have caused already.

I remember when my daughter was a baby the stupid pediatrician told me she was obese and he treated me as if I was a complete idiot because the baby was at the very top of the weight chart. I pointed out my daughter was born at nearly 10 lbs and wasn't obese at a few months. He argued she'd grow up to be an obese child and gave me a horrible, condescending attitude. My point is that someone CAN presume a baby will be obese - the doctor did. Who knows what harm could have come to my daughter if I'd listened to that "expert." I'm glad I didn't listen to him, never went back there, and my daughter grew up to be a normal-weight, happy child/teen/adult. That doctor is just as much a fool as those parents - even more so, as he should have known better (given his profession). I feel bad for the kids in that family and agree w/others that the kids need to be safely cared for by someone else. So sad.

And they let her out to take care of her other three children? What's with that? They ALL should have been removed from the home!!!
    • Brain Doodles  •  6 mths ago
The mother was "release(d) on bond so that she could tend to her other three children." ??? Why does she still have those children? She has not tended well to this one!

every child has to be looked at as a separate case. Frankly it is fair and it is just. There are a slew of variables that can be present besides.

I am African . I laugh when these kind of cases are taken as big issues. In that case I would sue every Developed Nations in Heaven at the end for not delivering enough for Africa

She starves her child, yet they let her go back and care for her other children. Genius

She is still allowed to have contact with the other children? It sounds like the state of Wi. is now endangering them. Biting and starving your children is not "misguided" it is abusive.

WHY IS a felony count of child neglect ONLY a year in prison and a $25,000 fine if convicted?
      Shouldn’t it be more?

The mother looks like she could lose 50 lbs or so!
    • deepsouth  •  6 mths ago
First of all, I thought the mom was a man. But more important, what kind of guy worries about a infant being fat? That in it self shows that he has issues.

I cant believe they released her to tend to her other children. That is just wrong. Personally, all children should be removed! How the heck did she get away with that???

Give the children to someone else! As a 31 year old woman who can't have children, I would DEFINITELY take a child in need. RIDICULOUS!
    • Tommy  •  6 mths ago
Looking at the pictures of the couple, they don't appear to be the sharpest tools in the shed. Why would they be irritated that the doctors were concerned about the infants weight?Normal parents would be #$%$ concerned themselves.Sorry, but they have something in their lives more important than their childs well-being. They just have that look that screams....Drugs.

Just a question - did they do IQ testing on these parents? Are they functioning at a level that they could even be trained to be good parents?
