Wis. defense attorney says starved girl is a liar

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The defense attorney for a Wisconsin man charged with starving and torturing his 16-year-old daughter says the girl is a liar.

Attorney William Hayes told jurors during closing arguments Thursday in Madison that the girl is mentally ill and not to be believed.

His comments come after Assistant Dane County District Attorney Matthew Moeser (MOE-sir) told jurors that the man hid his daughter in his basement so people wouldn't ask questions. Moeser says the girl didn't know what day or month it was.

The girl weighed 68 pounds when she ran away from the home in February 2012 and was discovered by a passing motorist.

The Associated Press isn't naming the man to avoid identifying the girl, who has said her stepbrother tried to sexually assault her.
