    Wis. gov unveils new plan to speed economic growth

    MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker has unveiled a new initiative designed to identify potential shovel-ready sites for economic development to speed the site selection and permitting process.

    Dubbed "Ready, Set, Build!" the program Walker announced Tuesday would be run by the quasi-public Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation. Walker says a third party consultant will also assist in the development and administration of the new program.

    The program is designed to identify, review and approve for pre-certification up to 10 sites a year. Once approved, the sites will be deemed to be certified-ready, which Walker says will speed up development.

    Democratic Party Chairman Mike Tate called the new initiative a gimmick that would short circuit established permitting procedures and pose risks to the environment.

    Walker says he hopes to have it running by spring.

      MILWAUKEE (Reuters) - A former aide to Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker pleaded guilty on Tuesday to charges of soliciting campaign contributions while she was supposed to be working at her government job, and agreed to assist in the investigation into illegal fundraising.

      Darlene Wink, 61, a former assistant to Walker when he was Milwaukee County Executive, was charged late last month along with another former Walker aide.

      The guilty plea to two misdemeanor charges could give fresh ammunition to critics seeking to recall Republican Walker over a law he championed last year curbing the powers of public sector unions. A representative for Walker was not immediately available for comment.

      Wink had been charged along with another woman, former deputy chief of staff Kelly Rindfleisch, in an investigation into allegations of illegal political fundraising.

      The investigation found that a private e-mail network had been set up and run out of Walker's office in 2010 to communicate campaign and government-related information to "select individuals," according to Milwaukee County prosecutors.

      I would think Walker would want to build a new white-collar prison - somewhere he'll be comfortable to sit in after he is indicted and convicted. Let's see, campaigning on the taxpayers' dime and running a secret wireless network to illegally get around public disclosure requirements and help hide illegal activities like the money stolen from the veteran's group.

      MILWAUKEE — Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker said Friday all he knows about FBI agents seizing items from the home of one of his top agency officials is what he's seen in the media and that his office has not been told anything about the raid.

      The first-term governor said "it's hard to tell" whether he should be concerned about Wednesday's raid on the home of Cynthia Archer, who was his aide while Milwaukee County executive and followed him to work in state government when he was elected governor.

      "We don't know what exactly is involved," Walker said Friday when asked about the raid following an unrelated event in Milwaukee.

      "Until we know, obviously it's a concern but again, I don't know any more details than what I've seen reported in the media outlets around the state," he added.

      The raid came amid a secret Milwaukee County investigation that the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, citing unnamed people familiar with the case, has reported focuses on whether county staffers in Walker's office did political work on the taxpayer dime.

      Walker said he has not been in touch with Archer.

      Risk for the environment? Is this the only criticism Wisconsin democratic chairman has got? We've got EPA to worry about that my friend. At least Walker's trying. What Quinn is doing? Giving tax relief to CAT and Sears to stay in Illinois (after they threatened to leave) but squeezing out medium and small employers by his corporate tax increase he approved a year ago.
