Witnesses describe scene of terror at Norway camp

The gunman who killed at least 80 people at an island youth camp northwest of Oslo used his disguise to lure in his victims, then shot them twice to make sure they were dead, survivors said in the village of Sundvollen, where they were taken after the massacre.

"I saw many dead people," said 15-year old Elise, whose father, Vidar Myhre, didn't want her to disclose her last name. She just feet away from the gunman when he opened fire in the camp on Utoya island.

Elise said she had just come out from an information meeting in a nearby building when she heard gunshots. She saw a police officer and thought she was safe, but then he started shooting.

"He first shot people on the island. Afterward he started shooting people in the water," she said.

Elise said she hid behind the same rock that the killer was standing on. "I could hear his breathing from the top of the rock," she said.

In panic, the girl phoned her parents, whispering to them what was going on.

"They told me not to panic and that everything would be OK." Her parents also told her to get rid of a brightly colored jacket she was wearing to not draw attention to herself.

She said it was impossible to say how many minutes passed while she was waiting for him to stop.

Survivors described a scene of sheer terror at the camp, which is organized by the youth wing of Norway's ruling Labor party. Hundreds of young people were eagerly awaiting a speech the prime minister was to give there Saturday.

Police said the man arrested in the shooting is Norwegian and had set off a bomb that killed seven people outside the prime minister's headquarters in Oslo, about 20 miles (35 kilometers) from the camp.

Several of the survivors seemed calm as anxious parents picked them up at a Sundvollen hotel, but the stories they told were of utter terror.

Dana Berzingi said the fake police officer ordered people to come closer, then pulled weapons and ammunition from a bag and started shooting.

Several victims "had pretended as if they were dead to survive," the 21-year-old said. But after shooting the victims with one gun, the gunman shot them again in the head with a shotgun, he said.

"I lost several friends," said Berzingi, whose pants were stained with blood. He said he used the cell phone of one of his fallen friends to call police.

Emilie Bersaas, identified by Sky News television as one of the youths on the island, said she ran inside a school building and hid under a bed when the shooting started.

"At one point the shooting was very, very close (to) the building, I think actually it actually hit the building one time, and the people in the next room screamed very loud," she said.

"I laid under the bed for two hours and then the police smashed a window and came in," Bersaas said. "It seems kind of unreal, especially in Norway. This is not something that could happen here."

Another camper, Niclas Tokerud, stayed in touch with his sister through the attack through text messages.

"He sent me a text saying 'there's been gunshots. I am scared (expletive). But I am hiding and safe. I love you,'" said Nadia Tokerud, a 25-year-old graphic designer in Hokksund, Norway.

As he boarded a boat from the island after the danger had passed he sent one more text: "I'm safe."

Because they're people. Ever since we started walking upright, there have been nutty neo-monkies. History is living proof. There aren't more now, they just get reported more openly and quickly.

So, relax, the world isn't ending and there isn't a nut waiting around the corner to do us harm. And, if, God and Allah forbid, there is, hope you're not in his path. And if you are in his path, run.

There is so much hatred- even in the posts that I have been reading. Liberals vs Conservatives, Christians vs. Muslims, Race Wars, all of it senseless, barbaric and very primitive. I am Conservative, but I consider a Liberals points of view because they have validity to them. I am Christian, but respect a Muslims faith because despite what many think, they preach good morals as well. Everyone has a right to believe what they want, and everyone is entitled to their opinions without fear of consequences and reproach. Violence begins with words, and the words that have been written on this post are fueling that hatred unbeknownst to all of you.

Thank You! I wish more would act like true "CHRISTIANS" because if Jesus Christ was with us now - in your home - beside you at your computer - do you really, really believe, he would not be shedding tears at all the HATRED; BIGOTRY; UNADULTERATED ANGER & INTOLERANCE being spewed here on this site? Bow your heads - really pray from the Heart & I'll bet, this is not the WILL of JESUS CHRIST - whose death came about because of HATE & IGNORANCE. Yes - he chose to die to save us from ETERNAL DAMNATION, in the hope we will live to spread LOVE, PEACE & COMPASSION. Stop proselytising the Bible & LIVE IT! PLEASE!!!!!!

Michael...the Quran teaches us to respect Christians and Jews for their beliefs, as well. Peace!

I, myself, am Agnostic (Neutral/light form of Atheism). Even being Atheist, i completely respect all religions and find no fault in another believing in it, so long as it is not taken to the point of driving them to hate others outside said religion.. Yet i find it so very sad that there are so few people willing who share this ideology (to openly accept other's different views i mean). So much hate in the world.. all due to simple blindness

Hearfelt condolence from Pakistan... we can relate to the terror we live with each day!! these lunitics no matter which religion they belong to should not be allowed to rule the majority!!! that is why we should stand united against terrorism and should not point finger to cast, creed, religion and nationality...!! May Allah help us all!

I'm amazed, you don't have any thumbs down. A Pakistani Muslim. The truth is Rizwan, many Americans can happily coexist with others of different beliefs. Violence is the enemy.

Thank you Rizwan from a friend in America. You are very wise
      • Lynn 10 mths ago

The devil seems to be winning this war against hate, murder, child murder, child molesters. Every day it seems that there is something worse than the day before. By doing nothing we are feeding his attack, we need to pray like we have never prayed before. We need to take responsibilty and stop hating, stop enabling, be firm on the punishment for these people. God is watching us to see if we will work on making this world a better place for ourselves and our children

There is no god, no devil. Just messed up people
      • Gertie 10 mths ago
These are people who are doing these thing, not the devil. You are part of the problem, Sherie.

To the people who commented this. I pray that one day, God will open your eyes to the truth.

It's amazing that a father ask a journalist not to pring his daughter's last name, then the so-called reporter prints the father's last name. How assine is that? Don't know what to make of the rest. Too horrible to contemplate. My sympathies to those whose children fell victim to this person, and to all others affected by it.
      • porcelain 10 mths ago
maybe they don't have the same one
      • anonymous 10 mths ago
or that may not be his last name? some people do go by two names (anna-grace ie.)
      • Rebel_Rob 10 mths ago
Most Norwegians use 3 names. The two listed are most likely first and middle names.
    • SeanA  •  10 mths ago
Did anyone else notice the part where the father didn't want the daughter's last name disclosed but the father's last name was posted?
    • bonini80  •  10 mths ago
helloooo!!! it doesn't say his religion in this article, only that he's norwegian. where do people come up with crap!! anyways, our world is not a safe place anymore. no matter what religion, some people are just evil. I am sad that this happened. Lord save us!!

THE WORLD HAS BEEN ENDANGERED TO THE EXTENT THAT NO ONE ANYWHERE IS SAFE ANYMORE. THE SOLUTION IS FOR GOVERNMENTS OF THE WORLD TO BEGIN TO DO GREAT THINGS CONCRETE ABOUT RELIGIOUS HARMONY, GLOBAL ECONOMY AND SECURITY.

"I saw many dead people," said 15-year old Elise, whose father, Vidar Myhre, didn't want her to disclose her last name.

      .....*facepalm*

Unless she has a different last name than her father... Sigh.

The only thing more horrifying than this story itself is the amount of people below blaming it on the Muslim religion.
He was Christian, but either way, it is completely irrelevant.
He was a bad person, and bad people can fallow any religion.

Sad... what a tragedy! I will now take a sec to pray for those who lost their lives!
      AMEN

al hamdlillah he was not muslim.
    • Frankie Bananas  •  10 mths ago
Gee, in the last 5 minutes I've read posts that claim he was Muslim, Christian, right wing, left wing and one #$%$ that compared him to Tea Party folks. Rather than bring your personal baggage in here, maybe the focus could remain on the people who perished.

I hate to say it, but it's going to happen in the U.S., too. It's just a matter of time. Too much hatred here and too many radicalized people with too much fire power. Race haters, political hatred on the right and left, too many talk show radicals that are causing panic among ordinary citizens who take their pronouncements for absolute factual truth. What more or less started at Columbine will end up where? An uprising by some heavily armed militia? The Aryan Nation? Some race or gay hating group? Blackwater 'associates'? The consequences it will have are terrible to think about.

This is becoming a sick demented world. There are people out there who have lost their humanity. What could prompt this animal to kill 80 people. Pure unaduterated evil.
    • NinjaBearHunter  •  10 mths ago
First off, my condolences to the people of Norway and the families of the victims. Second, I am severely disappointed at the level of ignorance from quite a few people posting here. "if a christian does it its not terrorism". Really? I mean come on people. Either way, though, thats not entirely the point of the article. The point is many Norwegians were killed in a horrible way and we should all pray or take a moment of silence for them and their losses.

What do you suppose the indians thought when George Washington and his posse rode in an killed a whole tribe. Women and children included. It has always been a dog eat dog world. It has always been sad. If only everyone would respect each other's personal space?
    • Julie  •  10 mths ago
I know this is beside the point but if I was Elise's father I'd be really mad at the writer of this article. Way to disclose her FATHERS last name and thereby totally disregard his request.
