JENIN, West Bank (AP) — Residents of the West Bank city of Jenin say Palestinian security forces have arrested a prominent ex-fighter in a campaign of arrests that followed the death of its governor.
They say masked security men seized Zakariya Zubeidi on Sunday. Zubeidi was a well-known militant who once battled Israeli forces, but was granted amnesty four years ago and co-founded a theater. They spoke anonymously for fear of reprisal.
Palestinian forces have been rounding up suspects since the governor suffered a heart attack earlier this month after gunmen fired outside his home. The residents say Zubeidi may be related to the suspects.
His arrest risks enraging his followers.
Palestinian security confirmed an arrest raid, but had no comment on Zubeidi.
