Woman Dies After Contracting Legionnaires' Disease From Dentist's Office

An 82-year-old Italian woman died after she contracted Legionnaires' disease, a severe, pneumonia-like illness, from the water in her dentist's office, according to a case report published in the journal The Lancet.

Scientists who determined the source of the woman's illness, which occurred in February 2011, said during the disease's incubation period the woman only left her home twice to visit her dentist.

When they tested the water in both places, they discovered the bacteria that causes Legionnaires' in the dentist's water line. Water lines carry water from the main water supply to certain devices used during patient care.

While the authors wrote the most common sources of infection are air conditioning systems, hot water systems, spas and fountains, a recent study found dental water lines to be another major source of contamination with Legionella bacteria. Legionella pneumophila is the bacterial strain that causes Legionnaires' disease.

"However, as far as we are aware, no case of Legionnaires' disease has been associated with this source of infection," added the authors, led by Maria Luisa Ricci of the Italian National Health Service.

While it was not clear what kind of water line standards were in place in Italy, in the U.S., the American Dental Association (ADA) said infection control standards are very stringent in order to prevent cases like the one in Italy from happening.

"Since the ADA convened a special task force in the mid-1990s focusing on infection prevention, there have been a number of recommendations made to treat the water and keep the number of bacteria down," said John Molinari, the ADA's spokesman on infection control, infectious diseases and allergic reactions.

The ADA recommends that dental water lines contain no more than 500 colony-forming units of bacteria per milliliter of water, the same limit recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The ADA also recommends that dentists monitor water quality and maintain a water reservoir that is separate from the municipal water supply, as well as use filters that will keep microorganisms out of the water.

Legionella bacteria is one of the most common types of bacteria found in water.

"Legionella is found in old homes, shower heads and anywhere else there can be stagnant water," Molinari said.

Most dentists take the necessary precautions to protect their water lines from contamination, but Molinari said that the Italian case is an important reminder.

"This report sends the message that it can happen," he said.

yea but if she didn't go she would be alive, so not sure how that argument stacks up against her age... and know that there are plenty of MD's who factor in an age when deciding to perform a surgery or not...

I'm in dental hygiene school and after every patient we purge our water lines for 30 seconds then at the end of clinic we run the water for 2 minutes at each station. Also, once a week we run disinfectant through all our water lines. The school does a good job teaching us about disinfection, disease, cross contamination, etc.. So hooray for something good!

It doesnt matter where the incident happened. Legionnaires Disease is deadly, and causes lifetime breathing problems IF the patient does survive it! My brother got LD in the 90's , and almost died. He had to retire early as he wasnt able to continue working because his lung capacity was limiting him. Today, he is on oxygen 24/7 and cant walk more than 5 feet without it. The bacteria can be anywhere where there is water that is not monitored and treated regularly. Even though this incident happened in Italy, its good the article was published here. It helps each of us to be more aware of what could happen. Problem in the US OSHA doesnt find the problem until AFTER an incident occurs.

Sorry about your brother..You get outside of the major cities an .its not monitored..some systemic run-of does make its way out..Your Brother caught it in a factory?..Some people believe that it as usual has been cured?...it lies in those still waters..where no one tests it!

It's obvious that this didn't happen in the US. If it did, the title would've been "Family of deceased 82 year old woman suing her dentist for $12 million."

I was getting a procedure done at a hospital and I noticed a gloved nurse absentmindedly grabbed the bedrails. I asked her if she had washed her hands and she looked dumbfounded that I even would inquire. No wonder people die all the time at hospitals due to infections.

So, are they advising us to take bottled water to the dentist to rinse?
    • Janice  •  Tampa, Florida  •  3 mths ago
I have worked in several Dental offices over the last 15+ years and only in one office were the traps ever cleaned! And lets don't forget about the water in the compressor too! In our offices, never cleaned! The ADA "recommends" servicing this system, but the dentist or staff usually don't. You can call your local health department about this, but they don't care either. Inspections on these systems are notconducted by any local, professional or government agency. It is left up to the dentist. Scary stuff!!

This happened in ITALY. Mosts dentists in the USA use distilled water in their reservoirs.

Legionnaires disease almost did me in..This stuff is no joke..Rarely do you ever hear about it..When I had it I literally couldn't breathe..Eventually I was taken to ICU and hooked up to a breathing machine for 3 weeks..I caught it in 92' and my lunges were so severely damaged that I still feel the effects..

      If you only knew...
Food handling - nothing is washed before it's cooked.
Dentist offices - ever notice how your dentist keeps cross-contaminating his gloves whenever he adjusts the light, etc. You know that (the handle cover) doesn't get changed between every single patient.

Something you'll never hear: "It's time to wash those blood pressure cuffs!"

Although the US is slightly better, our medical environments are often filthy and disease ridden. More people get sick when they go to a hospital than should be the case.
