Woman found dead inside burned out fifth-wheel camper in Marion backyard

State and local authorities are investigating a Monday morning fire in Marion that destroyed a fifth-wheel camper and claimed the life of a woman.

According to a press release issued by the City of Marion Fire Department, the woman — whose identity has not been released — was found dead inside the camper. The fire occurred around 5 a.m. Monday in the backyard of a residence at 960 Bryant St. between Libby Lane and Fairview Street on the north side of Marion.

A fire department spokesman said the first unit arrived on the scene at 5:04 a.m. and discovered the camper "heavily involved in fire." Witnesses at the scene told authorities that one individual escaped from the flames, but that another person was still inside the camper.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the flames in a few minutes, according to the press release, and then discovered the woman's body inside the camper.

The Ohio State Fire Marshal's Office, Marion Fire Department and Marion Police Department are still investigating the fire. Anyone with information concerning the incident is asked to contact Capt. Josh Ross of the Marion Fire Department at 740-382-0040 or email him at jross@mcfd.us.

Fire department officials said their "thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by this tragic incident."
