Woman found dead near golf cart in St. James City canal

A woman who died in a golf cart crash Monday along Curlew Road in St. James City was Lee County's first vehicle fatality for 2022.

A report from the Lee County Sheriff's Office said the woman's body was seen shortly before 8:30 a.m. floating in a canal off Curlew and next to a golf cart that was in the water with her arm still holding on to the steering wheel.

A resident in the area saw the body and called 911, the Sheriff's Office report states.

The report said the golf cart was about 15 feet into the canal and off a boat ramp.

No other details were available.
