Woman Who Lost Her Family in Christmas Day Fire Reportedly Attempted Suicide

The tragic story of a deadly Christmas Day fire in Connecticut took another sad turn after it was reported that the woman who survived attempted to kill herself. CBS 2 in New York and the New York Daily News report that Madonna Badger was hospitalized last week after a failed suicide attempt, but has been released and is "in a safe place." Badger's three young daughters and both her parents died after her home in Stamford, Connecticut, burned down in the early morning hours on December 25. CBS also reported yesterday that all the smoke detectors and fire extinguishers had been removed from the home and stored in the garage so that the house could be painted. Badger's boyfriend, Michael Borcina, was the only other survivor of the fire and was also the contractor overseeing the renovations being done on the home.

I can understand Ms. Badger's severe emotional pain about losing the parents who raised and supported her and in turn the three children she was loving and nurturing. To lose her loved ones all at once must make her feel all alone in the world and wondering why she was left behind and what is left for her now in life. Having suffered severe depression in the past, I can well understand how one might believe and feel there would be a peace that can only be found in death, and for some, a reunification. I cannot faulta or judge her actions, and can only pray for her peace and comfort, as I hope everyone does.

That poor woman. I can totally understand why she wanted to leave this earth. I hope she finds peace either way she goes.

A few years back, a local family of 5 or 6 kids and their father all died in a plane crash. The mother didn't go along and was the only survivor, When I visit my grandparents gravesite, I see this little area, always with decorations or flowers and balloons on each little grave. It wrenches my heart and I always wonder how she has the strength to go on when her entire family was killed. I hope the woman that lost her family Christmas can find some kind of strength to go on like the woman in my town did, but I feel so sorry for her, because I know I couldn't.

I have been haunted by this story since it broke on Christmas morning...I had a hard time "being merry" that day...I have often wondered about her since then, and now to hear this it makes me so sad all over again. I hope she finds peace soon, in whatever way she can. God Bless her..

How does someone survive something like that? How do you put one foot in front of the other and go on? To be honest, I don't think I could. My kids are my life.

That's horrible! Feeling like so much of a failure then failing at killing herself!

Can't say I blame her. I would have probably done the same thing. I doubt I could live her life now. My heart breaks for her. I hope she finds peace, no matter how elusive it is at this time in her life.

I don't think too many people can understand what it would feel like to lose your entire family just like that, I know I can't. I truly hope that she's one day able to not forget, but to bear this tragedy and hold on to the hope that she will see them all again someday

I can see why she wants to die. Why? Why? do you remove fire alarms and extinguishers from a wood home? She feels like she killed them. I know I would.

Would love to be this lady's friend - just to give her a long hug and just be there to chat with her - make her feel wanted and not alone. Crying now. :(

Ms. Madonna, please continue to live for your kids and parents and know that even though your heart is weary and the days are longer so it seems, this empty vessels will heal and know that God is right beside you and so are we.
