Woman In Love With Fiance's Twin Is Now In Double Trouble

DEAR ABBY: I am 26 and have been dating "Mike" for four years. We met in our senior year of college and recently became engaged. I'm looking forward to being married and starting a family, but there's one "small" problem. I'm in love with Mike's identical twin brother, "Matt."

Mike and Matt are identical in appearance, but Matt is funnier, more outgoing and affectionate than my fiance. I didn't know he existed until a year ago because they had a falling out at their high school graduation and didn't reconcile until recently.

When I met Matt, I knew right away he was the one for me, but I continued dating Mike because I didn't want to ruin his re-established relationship with his brother. Matt reciprocates my feelings. He has told me he's in love with me and wants to date me.

I know I shouldn't have accepted Mike's proposal, but I don't want to hurt him or start another fight between him and his twin, but I also don't want to be married to the wrong man for the rest of my life. I'm unsure what to do. The wedding date has been set. Help! -- IN LOVE WITH THE DOUBLE

DEAR IN LOVE: You should have put the brakes on the relationship with Mike the minute you realized you were attracted to Matt. The engagement should be ended immediately. That you would not only continue to date Mike but also accept his proposal of marriage knowing you were more attracted to his twin was cruel.

If Matt starts seeing you after the breakup, it will probably cause a permanent rift between them. It will be interesting to see what happens when you become available because with some people the "apple" that's just out of reach is the one that's most enticing -- and you may wind up married to neither brother.

DEAR ABBY: My 4-year-old son made a snowman in our front yard and then went inside to take a nap. Our neighbor came over with his son -- age 16 -- to talk to my husband.

When I brought my 3-year-old daughter outside to see the snowman her brother made, I was horrified to see it was now "anatomically correct"! I asked my husband who did it, and he said it was the neighbor's son. My husband thought it was funny and that I was overreacting.

I think the behavior was inappropriate, and the fact that my daughter saw it and wondered what was "hanging on the snowman" was no laughing matter. If the neighbor wanted to make an X-rated snowman, he should have made it in his own front yard. Do you think I'm being too sensitive? -- FAILS TO SEE THE HUMOR

DEAR FAILS TO SEE THE HUMOR: Yes, I do. While I agree the neighbor boy's "artistic endeavor" was in poor taste, it provided an opportunity to answer your daughter's question in a matter-of-fact way and explain there are anatomical differences between boys and girls. You could also have explained that private parts are not supposed to be displayed in public, and asked your husband to remove them as you took your little girl back into the house. Seeing the snowman would not traumatize your daughter as much as seeing you shocked and upset.

1 - Walk away from this family. Not only has the brother handed you a steaming pile of trouble but they have enough problems without having you contribute to their gene pool.
      • Tree Dweller 3 mths ago
Great little zinger there, Watcher! :-D

Steaming pile of......whew... I thought you were about to say something else!!!

Hey Watcher! I just wanted you to know that I loved your comment!

I just want to say if your fiancee's twin told you he's in love with you and wants to date you knowing full well that you are in a relationship with his brother I can see why they must have had a falling out. Regardless of what you think of his "qualities" that's a really sleazy and self-absorbed thing to do, thinking you have a right to try to break up the relationship between someone else for your own selfish desires, and even worse his own brother. It's the principle with how any woman can think the qualities of someone who is willing to cheat on and hurt their own family with you are "amazing." It's a huge red alert screaming, "Bad! Bad!"
      • AmandaP 3 mths ago
Tony, this is a fabulous point.
      • cheryl 3 mths ago
On the other hand, it seems the letter writer and Matt are made for each other. Neither one has any loyalty or ethics.
    • AsISeeIt  •  3 mths ago
LW1 - Why do I see you "accidentally" snuggling into bed next to Matt on some future family get-together?
      • Amanda B. Recondwith 3 mths ago
oops I slipped and fell into the bed.
      • Alicia 3 mths ago
I can see it now. Her and Matt going at it and Mike walks in. She looks at Mike and says "It's not what you think. I slipped and fell." LOL. Of course I always love hearing the cheater, caught in the act, saying "It's not what you think..."
      • Mindy 3 mths ago
More than likely, Alicia, She would say she thought Matt was Mike! Then pretend to be horrified. ;)

Break what off? Her husband's or the twins'?
    • Laura  •  3 mths ago
LW1: Hate to break it to you, but you have more than a "small" problem. You're in the middle of a great big mess. You say you don't want to hurt Mike or start another fight between him and his twin; too late for that, sister.
    • Terri J.  •  Cincinnati, Ohio  •  3 mths ago
If Matt were truly reconciled with his brother, he would NOT have let it escalate into this situation. He would have kept his distance romantically, and made it clear to you from the start that he is respecting his twin brother's relationship with you. Matt is a creep.
      • Rockytop 3 mths ago
and the LW is a doll...
      • LisaH 3 mths ago
Yup, I think she's nothing more to Matt then another weapon against his brother. Clearly, they have not reconciled.
      • montefraya 3 mths ago
        Love the sarcasm, Rockytop!
    • Ann  •  3 mths ago
LW2: Maybe it's just because I've drawn lots of naked people, but I find it more offensive that someone messed with something on the property rather than how they messed with it (in this very particular circumstance). I would react the same way as if I found out the kid had put gum over the peephole on our door - no damage done, but it should still be explained to the kid not to do it again or there will be trouble. It seems to me that children base their understanding of things off of how adults react to them. Far more productive it would have been to do exactly what Abby replied with.
    • Fortuna  •  3 mths ago
The letter reminds me of the day my kids made anatomically correct, though greatly exaggerated gingerbread people. Those were the good old days.

LW #1, You are toxic. For the sakes of both Mike and Matt, run! Run as fast as you can away from them and never, ever bother them again.
    • FredF  •  3 mths ago
Sounds like Mike and Matt's reconciliation will be short-lived.

I underestand that you can be attracted to someone who you aren't in a relationship with, but you aren't supposed to pursue it or fan the flame.. You squelch it!! People are dumb. There are always going to be people coming in and out of your life that you're attracted to, but you chose the one you chose and you should learn to be happy with what you have (unless, of course, there is abuse going on but that is a different topic)! Come on, people! Just because your fiance or spouse isn't what you want them to be, doesn't mean that you are allowed to fall into a relationship with someone else, even if it is just emotionally. Why did she let herself get into conversations and situations with "Matt" where they were able to tell eachother they are in love with one another? Have some respect for the person you're with!!!! This is what's wrong iwth people these days!

ANATOMICALLY CORRECT SNOWMAN : Geez lady, it's people like you end up with whiny drama queen girls. You really think a 3 yr old is going to remember the snowman anyway? How is a toddler going to be traumatised over some silly snow unless you show her how to do it? You could have told her the snowman was holding a puppy but it wasn't a very good puppy, then remolded it into a puppy. Or *anything* but the hand waving melodramatic course you chose.

When I was 2 my Mom saw me standing infront of a mirror, after a bath, and crying. When she asked me what was wrong, I keep saying " Who cut it off"? My brother and I had always bathed together and I had never noticed my own lack of parts before.

TWINS : It's kind of strange that a man would know a woman for FOUR years and never even mention he had an estranged twin brother until they were reconciled one year ago. Furthermore, no friend or relative of his ever mentioned it to her either. That's a red flag even if she hadn't turned it into a soap opera. Wonder what else he hasn't told her about? I think she would be well rid of both of them, and they would be well rid of her. As many people commented here, it looks like history repeating itself. They are all fools. Next chapter: Jerry Springer Show.
    • PinkFloydFan413  •  3 mths ago
LW#1 Your story reminds me of a Jerry Springer show I saw waiting for my dad at the doctors. Which happened to be the only time I watched more than 30 seconds of Jerry. The woman was madly in love with a guy that could last hours in bed. Turned out he had a twin brother and they would play "tag team" between the sheet wrestling. Needless to say Jerry's bouncers were needed to keep her from clobbering the two of them.
    • TeshaJ  •  3 mths ago
LW2: It is often our reaction to a situation that makes our children react. For example, when my daughter falls she looks right at me to see what I'll do, If I say "walk it off and go play" she stands up and goes to play. If I say "oh my baby are you okay" she cries and cries.
If you just give a quick explaination and don't overeact your daughter will just accept and move on.
    • Cassandra  •  3 mths ago
In love with the double should break up with Mike, and then do both brothers a favour and
disappear. She sound like a self centered jerk.
    • rev w  •  3 mths ago
Maybe the brotherly rift was caused because one bro keeps stealing the girls from the other.
    • LisaH  •  3 mths ago
LW1 - Matt may be "funnier, more outgoing and affectionate " then his brother, but he's also BIG trouble. What kind of man moves in on, or at least returns the interest, of his brother's fiancee? ESP since they have supposadly just reconciled?!

I suspect you are no more then a pawn to him, part of a battle they clearly have had going on.
