Woman pleads guilty in NY newborn kidnap case

NEW YORK (AP) — A woman who snatched a newborn baby from a New York City hospital in 1987, then raised the child as her own for more than two decades, pleaded guilty to a kidnapping charge Friday as the girl's true mother wept in the courtroom.

Ann Pettway, 51, appeared resigned to a life behind bars as she entered the plea at a federal courthouse in Manhattan. Her voice was flat as she briefly recounted how she took a train from her home in Bridgeport, Conn., to Harlem Hospital, where she scooped up Carlina White, a 3-week-old baby who had been brought to the emergency room by her parents.

"I went to the hospital. I took a child," she said. "It was wrong."

Pettway said little else during the hearing, and offered no explanation for why she would do such a thing. As part of her plea bargain, prosecutors agreed to recommend between 10 and 12½ years in prison, although the actual term will be set by a judge.

As Pettway admitted her guilt, Carlina's birth mother, Joy White, quietly cried in the courtroom gallery. Afterward, she told reporters that she was outraged at the plea bargain, and felt a decade in prison would be too light a punishment for the woman who had robbed her so cruelly. Justice, she said, would be a term of 23 years, one for every year she was separated from her daughter.

"I've lost 23 years of being with my daughter," she said, adding that those decades were filled with pain and heartache.

White said she still remembers encountering Pettway at the hospital on the day her daughter disappeared. She said the kidnapper was dressed like a nurse. "She came up to me and said to me, 'Don't cry. Your daughter is going to be OK.'"

A judge set a tentative sentencing date of May 14.

The sensational mystery of the baby's kidnapping was one that had stymied police for decades. In the end, the case was solved by Carlina herself.

As she grew up in Bridgeport under the name Nejdra Nance, White had become increasingly suspicious of her own identity. Pettway ultimately told her a part-truth. She admitted that she was someone else's daughter, but claimed she had been willingly given away by a drug addict.

White eventually took to browsing the website of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children for clues to her identity. After matching a photo of herself with one on the site, she tracked down her true mother. The two reunited in January of 2011. A DNA test later confirmed they were mother and child.

Today, they speak every day, Joy White said.

"I love my daughter. She's a beautiful girl," she said, adding that she had kept a picture of her missing baby at her bedside for 23 years. "She told me yesterday, mommy, you're my valentine."

Double the punishment: 23 years stolen from biological mother, and 23 years stolen from daughter.

If you cannot have children that doesnt mean you can go snatch other people's children!

        It does in America!

Pettway had a biological child later, so infertility wasn't a factor.

Joy, I am so happy for you, at long last you have your sweet baby girl back. Tell her everytime you see/talk to her just how much she means to you. As a mother, and now grandmother, it is my worst nightmare what you and your lovely daughter went thru. Love and prayers to you and your daughter.

It's a sad story but a beautiful ending. Smart young lady. Now that the case is over I wish mother and child endless years of love and appreciation! Happy 'Mother's Day'!

I couldn't even imagine being the mother of a child who was stolen from me, kidnap really doesn't fit. That child was stolen. Too bad 'hard labor' isn't around any longer. Bring back chain gangs! In prison 3 square meals, they have softball teams, free dental and medical. Heck, there are some prisoners at San Quentin who are having trouble sleeping and have been taken to a sleep apnea clinic!!! Then there's a mom with kids and the dad has split and they can't find enough money to pay the rent let alone the dentist.
And I still consider myself a liberal, but reality needs to come into play far more often. Common Sense.

We live in a world of contradictions. I do recall the sound of clinking chains of the chaingangs being escorted down the alley behind my grandparents house on their way to cut neck high grass with a swingblade on a work detail. Yeah, just like cool hand luke, maybe worse.

I agree with the birth mother; a year in jail for every year she went without her daughter.

This was horrible for the birth mother. Not knowing where your child is or what is happening to your child would be a daily torment! And this mother was in torment for 23 years!

even 23 years is not enough

Ten to twelve years would not be "justice". You can't turn back time but you can disuade others from doing the same by making the punishment fit the crime. She stole her baby for crying out loud! Think about it for a minute.

One of my children is this age. I can not even begin to imagine, missing out on even one second with this precious being.

How heartless the woman was to steal another woman's baby like that. Knowing how she was suffering when she saw her crying. Plain heartless. She should be jailed at the very least 25yrs. But I am glad that mother and daughter were finally reunited after all these years. Maybe they enjoy each other for many yrs to come.

I have no sympathy whatsoever for this dog. She literally deceived and then tortured this poor woman all those years. She should never see the light of day for her crime. I detest
this form of plead-bargaining justice. How absolutely heartless and cruel.

I feel that the proposed 10 to 12 year sentence is way too lenient. I propose 46 years divided as follows ; If this woman gets one year of prison for each year she inflicted on the little girl she kidnapped that is fair. If this woman gets one year for each year she inflicted on the rightful mother that is fair. 23 + 23 = 46.

I cant imagine the grief and loss her parents must have felt...its such a horrible crime...this really is a life in prison crime. You didnt get to be her mom, you will never get it back.

What a heart-wrenching story! I cried when I read this story because I can sort of understand how everyday would have been a struggle for the mother whose baby was taken. The kidnapper deserves a harcher punishment. No one can get their years back.

I don't understand that how could someone could do such this kind of thing? It was very wrong thing to do.
