Women Can Take Steps to Prevent Cervical Cancer

I feel that some of these illnesses should be free for all people to get checked for and treated. Like Cancer, Aids, Lupus, Heart Disease, Diabetes and such anything that can cause a death. The rest of the non life threatening illnesses you should pay with your insurance. Our government can pay for this. They just don't care its no money in it for them is all. But they need us to make money off of. But are not willing to save a life.

These recommendations are so random. HPV is a STD. Shouldn't the frequency of testing be linked to sexual behavior (more frequent when sexually active with different partners, less if not sexually active or same partner for many years), rather than recommendations based on age???

Why no mention of the HPV DNA test? In many ways it is more accurate than the Pap and should be used with the pap in sexually active women. As it is now too many women have had negative pap only to find out after it is too late that her sample was misread and her cancer was missed.

"A young women should get her first Pap test when she turns 21 and continue having a Pap test every two years until age 30. Women age 30 and beyond who have three consecutive negative Pap test results can be screened once every three years, the college says." This paragraph is a mess...A young women...and three negative test results warrants you to wait three more years to get checked...please correct this I'm sure there's someone out here using this junk as actual medical advice.

As far as when to get the first pap, my first gyn said either 18 or whenever you become sexually active

A woman's 1st and subsequent Pap tests should be based on sexual activity, not just age. Perhaps a different kind of test will become the mainstay in the future - one that can detect active HPV infection. Time will tell. But don't overlook the other half of this equation: boys and men. The #1 cause of head & neck (H&N) cancer in men today is HPV. A BIG change in just the past 5 years. HPV can also be spread via saliva, so kissing or sharing a straw/spoon/fork with someone with HPV can also spread the virus. It's NOT just spread via sexual activity. So please consider getting not only girls/women b/w the ages of 9 and 26 immunized (BEFORE they start dating, NOT just becoming sexually active), but ALSO men and boys. While it is true that immunization is only effective for 3 or 4 strains of the virus (depending on the immunization), these are the ones causing the vast majority of the problems. Just like the flu shots. And side effects of the immunizations have been shown to be minimal. Having gone through treatment for HPV-Mediated cancer of the tonsil, I would rather have my children risk side effects of the immunization, than go through what I did for cancer treatment.

Where's the advice not to smoke? Women who smoke over a period of years are at risk for cervical cancer no matter what their sexual practices are.

What about all the negative effects of the HPV vaccine? That vaccine doesn't cover every strain of the HPV strain.

I agree, a Pap should be done based on being sexually active, not age.

Not being a #$%$ will go a long way in preventing cervical cancer.

Now the women can say they got diseased from the men they went home with from the club.
