    Working-Class Americans Retreating from Church

Despite stereotypes to the contrary, Americans with only a high school diploma are dropping out of church faster than their more-educated counterparts.

In the 1970s, a new study finds, half of white Americans with a high school education attended church at least monthly. Now only 37 percent do. In contrast, 46 percent of highly educated white Americans attend church, only a 5 percent drop from the 1970s.

"There is a retreat from religion in what you'd call middle America, or working-class America," said study researcher W. Bradford Wilcox, a University of Virginia sociologist. Wilcox presented the work Sunday (Aug. 21) at the annual meeting of the American Sociological Association in Las Vegas.

    Religion gap

"Moderately educated" whites make up 60 percent of the adult white population in the United States, but little research has been done on this high-school educated population outside the realm of employment. Wilcox, who directs the National Marriage Project, a research group dedicated to the study and strengthening of marriage, had previously found that working-class Americans are now less likely to be steadily employed and married than previous generations.

"What we look at in this study is the way in which changes in employment, changes in marriage and changes in cultural attitudes are all acting together to make religion less relevant in the lives of middle Americans," Wilcox told LiveScience.

He and his colleagues analyzed nationally representative survey data from 25- to 44-year-olds taken from 1972 to 2010, including data from another series of surveys of women ages 15 to 44. In all, more than 25,000 individuals answered questions in the surveys.

In the 1980s, the researchers found, there was little difference in religious participation between high school- and college-educated whites. But by the 2000s, a gap appeared. Today, 46 percent of college-educated whites go to a church, synagogue or equivalent institution at least once a month, compared with 37 percent of high school-educated whites.

Whites without a high school diploma were the least likely to attend church in the 1970s and remain so today. In the 1970s, 38 percent attended church at least monthly. Today, only 23 percent do. (Blacks and Hispanics do not show the same declines.)

    Church, marriage and unemployment

The findings reveal a 13 to 15 percent drop in church attendance among those who did not finish high school or college, compared with only a 5 percent decline in those with a college degree, over the period studied.

The decline in church attendance among the non-college-educated matches a decline in stable work opportunities and in marriage among the working class, Wilcox said. All three factors interact with one another: Churchgoers are more likely to get married in the first place. Less stable employment might mean you don't make the leap into marriage, and the unmarried are less likely to attend church. Lack of a steady job might also cause people to shy away from a church community, Wilcox said.

"This instability they're feeling in the work force spills over into their family lives and into their ability to plug into religious communities," he said.

Whether the retreat from religion is a good or bad thing depends on your opinion about religion, Wilcox said. He's concerned, however.

"Religious institutions have often been sources of support and solidarity for working-class Americans," he said. "I think it does spell yet more trouble for this portion of the population."

Today's local congregations are ruled by Satan. The holy spirit is not present in any local congregations.

No Christians belong in a local congregation today. The church age ended on May 21, 1988. The only church that matters is the eternal church, whose authority is the Bible. God knows the members of His eternal church.

This may be true for his area but not our area.

Middle/upper class churches also serve as status reinforcement. This is often where middle and upper class will show their community of their commitment. These folks feel they must attend to affirm their community status.

Do not assign to much to this survey, with the state of our country, being what it is, thanks to our politicians, the more educated people make more money and are probably still working, there fore can afford the gas to go to church !!!! Vote for anyone who has never been a politician, beholding to no one. Lets get rid of the Parisites at the public trough, sucking us dry. Lets start with Reid and Pelosi, Pelosi in my opinion is posessed by an evil demon, I heard you could feel the evil just being close to her. Yuk !!!

Denominational Churches are institutions, historically endorsed by the nation states they endorse, corporate in nature, political by design, and wholely irrelevant spiritually. Irrelevant not that they fail to do some good, but because their focus is on maintaining their structure. God however, warned against the nature of central authority (Samuel's warning of the behavior of Kings) and against the state sponsered church (why we didn't need a Temple). God however asked followers to support one another emotionally, financially, and spiritually, thereby calling us into community. The Church, Jesus said, was wherever two or more gathered in his name to put into practice the teaching of supporting of one another. The most marginalized in our society do not find many churches that practice such support. Why? Because the instituional church sees them as a drain on the bottom line. The wealthy, and upwardly mobile, use the church to convince themselves that they don't need to practice these teachings, that they have what they have by divine providence. The institutional churches uphold that sentiment to continue to collect their revenue of which less than 3% goes to the widows, orphans, poor, or sick we were commanded to support. The income of institutional churches goes to professional clergy, buildings, support staff, their insurance and pensions thus upholding their bureaucracy and its control over those who work within it. Please do not confuse a wonderful mandate given us for mutual support from a loving God, with the business conducted by those who stole his name for the sake of profit.
Sharing from the heart builds relationships and fosters peace. The other abomination we call church steals the resources intended for us to share, the joy of sharing them directly with those in need, and the relationships that would build trust and community.

"Americans with only a high school diploma are dropping out of church faster than their more-educated counterparts." I have to apologize to the less-educated among us. Apparently, they're not as dumb as I thought.

The church I attend seats 3600..Services are Wednesday, Saturday, and two on Sunday. Its usually pretty much filled up during ALL the services. When there are special events going on, its usually filled to capacity, with people lining up to get in.

The Idea that church has nothing to do with God is against scripture. Jesus plainly said HE would build HIS CHURCH. Jesus died for HIS Church. Scripture tells us "Where two or more are gathered in my name, I will be there in the midst of them."

The moral decay going on in our country is evident everywhere. IF what this article is saying is true, can one not help but wonder why this is happening? With no objective morality, we are at the mercy of our feelings/instincts/majority.

They are leaving Church because Churches have become nothing more than gathering places for the Republican Party and radical Tea Baggers. It's all about politics and money .....they wouldn't even let Jesus in the door at most Churches I have attended in the last few years.

If Jesus spoke at most Churches about the need to help the Poor, He would be stoned to death before he could get out the door. If Jesus told the White "Chosen Few" that people of color were loved by God as much as White people, they would burn Him at the stake. You think I am kidding? You know it's true.

Wow, I know don't what church you people are talking about. My family belongs to the Church of Christ and it is a New Testament church. We study the Bible as a whole, the Old Testament so that we don't make the same mistakes as our country is doing at the moment and we study and live my the New Testament. We act as a family, we talk to each other, we gather at each others houses, apartments, we have picnics, parties, get togethers, once a month we all have lunch together. No one is singled out, we have a food pantry to help anyone who comes to the church, we have had many in our own church that has lost jobs and we have helped them also with money/food what ever the need may be. They are not looked down upon. We welcome all people of all colors and if someone walks away not being talked to, then it's because they did not want to be talked to. People are greeted the minute they walk in and after the service is over. And we love the kids in our church, so we always welcome the children as well. We have sermons that make you laugh, can make you cry, make you mad, tug at your heart, and make you think at your own life. If anyone of those makes you think that you have done wrong, then you probably have. It's not the preacher standing up there telling you that you have done wrong - he can't see into your life or your heart, he isn't God and doesn't pretend to be. However, if you feel he is looking at you and telling you that you have done wrong then you probably have done some wrongs. Don't blame the preacher, blame yourself. There have been times when I felt like I was the only one in attendance and the preacher was talking only to me, we all have those days.
So I don't know what church you all are talking about but without our church, we would not have been able to survive!

I love the passage in the film The Book of Eli where the guy that was searching for "The Book" turns and says to his henchman.
I want the Book because it has beautiful words and if I can repeat those beautiful words many people will come for other parts of our land so I can control them with the beautiful words.

He was talking about the bible and this passage from the film sums it all up. TO CONTROL the ignorant s, such as has been happening from the beginning of these so called religions
      • JD 8 mths ago
I saw the movie also and only evil wants to control not good. If you believe in good you have to believe in evil.
      • seek the truth 1 8 mths ago
I liked that movie and there is some truth to the comment. People create these religions, but its about a relationship not religion. allaboutgod.com
      • N_O_T_W 8 mths ago
I liked the movie! Think of it another way, The actor was actually on to something..."The Book has beautiful words..." Why would he say that?
Have you read the Bible? What beautiful words was he talking about?

In the movie this character was portrayed as an evil, controlling fiend. Is it any wonder that he would try to use anything (even something good), as a way of fulfilling his own evil desires?

If i use a hammer, which in itself is a good tool, to bash someones head in, is the hammer at fault? Is the hammer evil?

No, the fault is soley on the evil that we do. God is NOT to blame for the actions of sinners who by exercising the free will God gave them, use His Word as a means to control or profit from the innocent.

good, normal, American Christians are in line withe our Christian Nation and Christian Constution. All others can believe what they want in our Christian nation, but still realize it will always be a Christian nation. There is no such thing as seperation of Church and State. That is a liberal amendent that our Christian founders had no intention of installing in our country.

Most of the Founding Fathers that we idolize WERE NOT CHRISTIAN!!! They were Unitarian. Had Darwin existed and worked a century earlier, most of them would have probably been atheists. The were men of reason and science not religion and myth. Do some freaking homework before sprewing misinformation.

With the way the whacked out fundy xtians behave these days, who can blame normal folks who rightly decide to stay away?
      • N_O_T_W 8 mths ago
Last I checked, Christians do not have a monopoly on wacky behavior.

I have been visiting a nearby church, after an absence of about 30 years, and was aiming to join, but I keep having a nagging feeling that I just don't belong there. Am continuing to take it day by day, to decide what to do. I just don't feel 'spirited' or 'full of belief.'

Don't be afraid to stop by some other churches too. Picking the right church can be a lot of work. But it's worth it, you don't want to attend a church that is going to lead you down the wrong path.

This is no surprise to me with the decline of church attendance there is a rise in moral decay dont have to be a genuis to figure this out
    • Core Blimey  •  9 mths ago
Good to hear this, as organized religion is such a critical facet in moral decay. More people should abandon institutions and find their own personal spirituality, and then keep it to themselves. Some of your holy scriptures actually request you do so.
    • Curmudgeon  •  9 mths ago
Yeah, sometimes it's kinda hard to find God in a church. What you mostly find is just people. Sometimes you find Christians, sometimes you find people who are tripping themselves, and sometimes you find legalists and shoutin' hyperventilators. Sometimes you find preachers trying to cash in on a "prosperity gospel" (which is a L-o-n-g way from Gospel) and sometimes you just find a bunch of Conspiracy nuts. Sometimes you find an "inclusive" church, in which people sit through some comforting platitudes, convince themselves that those vague, uneasy feelings of guilt before a Holy, Supreme God, are just vestigial leftovers from a primitive, unevolved state of mind, then go out and endorse/excuse any kind of sin because "we, ourselves, are (like) gods". Which is where we went wrong in the first place, if you'll remember. "You will be as gods, defining Good from Evil." (That, My Friends, was a Lie from the Pit.)
"If you seek Him with all your heart, you Will find Him". Doesn't say in an hour, a day, or a decade. It says "With ALL your heart"... so don't quit. He's still there.
