Mulder and Scully's Enduring Love: The World Wants to Believe!
Yesterday the nerd world burst into joyful hysterics over a rumor that actors David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, perhaps better known as Mulder and Scully, the characters they played on popular '90s sci-fi mystery show The X-Files, are living together and are in deepest lurve. It was a real-world answer to the ever-present will they/won't dynamic that the show (and subsequent two movies) fed off of for years and the subject of countless (probably unreadable) fan fiction exercises. Even though the show ended ten years ago (dear god) and the 2008 second feature film was mostly a critical and financial fizzle, people still seem to care about the romantic fate of the FBI's most intriguing special agents. Just look at how Twitter reacted!

And it goes on and on like that for infinity. Basically, we were not done with this relationship, in whatever real/fake meta way, even though nobody really talks about The X-Files anymore. But they seem to care a lot more about the show than, say, they do about the recent news that That '70s Show costars Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher, a couple on the show for many seasons, have struck up a real-life relationship, years later. No, something about Scully and Mulder, that particular pair, made us all excited.
Alas, today Duchovny's rep has denied the rumor, saying that they are still very good friends but that's it. All nerdy hopes have been dashed. But wasn't it fun to watch (our own) hopes soar? Kind of nice to know that we still care about those old friends, even if we haven't seen them in quite some time.
