    WPS Health Insurance is proud to sponsor the annual Thunder Run Charity Ride to Cure Diabetes for the ninth consecutive year. Organizers expect this year’s event to break $1 million in total funds raised.

    WPS Health Insurance, Wisconsin’s leading not-for-profit health insurer and provider of affordable individual health insurance and group health insurance, is proud to sponsor the 14th Annual Thunder Run Ride to Cure, a two-day fundraiser dedicated to the fight against diabetes. Hosted by 4 Lakes Capital City Harley Owners Group® (H.O.G. ®), the event will take place Friday and Saturday, July 8 and 9 at Capital City Harley-Davidson in Madison. This year’s goal is to raise $100,000, with all proceeds donated to Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International and the American Diabetes Association. By reaching this goal, Ride to Cure will surpass the $1 million mark for total funds raised over the charity’s 14-year history.

    Expected to draw hundreds of motorcycle enthusiasts from across the state, this year’s Thunder Run will feature a round-trip ride on Saturday from the Capital City Harley-Davidson dealership to the event’s host city of Fort Atkinson.

    “We are pleased and honored to once again sponsor this year’s Thunder Run for diabetes research,” said Jim Riordan, president and chief executive officer of WPS. “Motorcycle enthusiasts—particularly Harley-Davidson riders—embody the passion, drive, and independent spirit that one day will allow us to triumph over this disease. It’s wonderful to see so many come together in support of this worthy cause, and we’re grateful for everyone who has helped, and who continues to help, the Ride to Cure reach its $1 million milestone.”

    Friday’s Thunder Run events include a 12-stop poker run through the scenic hills, valleys and curves of southern Wisconsin, followed by a bike raffle, Bikini & Bike Calendar Competition, music, food, and refreshments. At noon on Saturday, the Ride to Cure will rumble out of Capital City Harley-Davidson for a group-escorted wind through the back roads to Fort Atkinson. At 2:30, riders will take another scenic route back to the Capital City dealership, where they will enjoy a bike show, tattoo contest, door prizes, silent auction, a drawing for the 2011 Road King Classic raffle bike, music, vendors, food, and refreshments. Free on-site tent and RV camping are available.

    Ride to Cure participants urge the community to come out and wave them on to victory against diabetes, a disease that affects an estimated 26 million Americans. Visit http://www.thunderrun2011.com to view the route roads and stake out a place from which to wave the riders on, or meet them at the municipal parking lot off Main Street in downtown Fort Atkinson where local nonprofits and businesses will provide food, drink, and entertainment.

    Bikes of all makes and models are welcome, and participation in Friday and Saturday’s on-site activities is open to everyone (no motorcycle required).

    On-site registration for the Thunder Run is $25 for both days ($10 for kids ages 16–18, $5 for ages 12–15, and children under 12 are admitted free). Fees include a Thunder Run T-shirt, a 2011 commemorative pin rocker, participation in the ride, and access to all events. A single-day admission fee of $10 will gain participants entry to Friday’s events (3 p.m. to close) only, or the after-ride festivities on Saturday (also 3 p.m. to close). (Single-day admission does not include T-shirt, pin rocker, or participation in the ride.)

    Raffle tickets ($10 cost, only 5,000 will be printed) give participants a chance to win their choice of a 2011 Harley-Davidson Road King Classic motorcycle valued at more than $20,000, or $10,000 cash. Tickets are available for sale at Capital City Harley-Davidson or in downtown Fort Atkinson at the Ride to Cure.

    WPS has sponsored the Ride to Cure for nine consecutive years since 2003, providing financial support for the cause as well as employee volunteers to work the event. An active supporter of local community organizations, WPS has also partnered with United Way, The Salvation Army, Komen Madison Race for the Cure, VSA of Wisconsin, and many others.
