Valentine's Day is meant to be a romantic holiday spent with that special someone. Maybe you usually have a romantic dinner and a movie or maybe you just spend the day together enjoying each other's company. Either way, the day is supposed to be for the two of you. By the end of the night, or early the next morning depending on how the day goes, the fire in the relationship should be rekindled and everything should be alright between you. Valentine's Day is a very comforting holiday, but once in a while it turns into a nightmare.

A few years ago, I was in a relationship with a girl and had been for almost a year at the time. The relationship was going well and things were starting to get serious. Although we both felt that we were too young for marriage, I did want to make that Valentine's Day special. I went to a close friend and had him get me a bottle of cheap wine while I went out and got a bouquet of roses. During my lunch break I had gone and set up blankets out in the soccer field where we had our first kiss. I had candles and a card out there waiting for her. It was the best romantic evening I could come up with at the time.

After I got off work, I went home and took a shower and got looking my best. After spending entirely too much time working on my hair and putting on too much cologne, I drove over to her house. With the flowers and wine behind my back, I knocked on the door. You can just imagine how pale my face went when my most recent ex opened the door. Yes, on the most romantic day of the year, my ex answered my girlfriend's door. I was shocked, but luckily for me I was young and healthy so I didn't have a heart attack.

The part that confused me the most at first was that my ex was as shocked as I was that we were standing in front of each other. Apparently my ex had just recently been hired at the same compnay as my girlfriend and that day had been her first. My girlfriend, being the overly friendly woman she is, decided to invite her for dinner, not expecting me to have any big plans for us that night. She had also failed to mention that I was her boyfriend. After the initial shock wore off, we both walked into the kitchen where my girlfriend was making dinner. I ended up spending Valentine's Day evening with my girlfriend and my ex. That was way beyond uncomfortable for me!

My ex ended up staying for dinner talking to my girlfriend and I. The dinner was macaroni and cheese. There was no wine, besides the bottle which I had brought home and ended up drinking all of by myself. The entire bouquet of roses ended up in the trash as ten o'clock rolled around. And by midnight, I had passed out drunk on the couch with my ex and girlfriend still talking about me at the kitchen table. The conversations had turned out to be mostly about how lazy I am and how I never do anything romantic. If only they knew the extents to which I had gone through to prepare a romantic evening for my girlfriend and I.

When I awoke in the morning with a horrible hangover from the cheap wine, I was surprised to see that my ex had actually left. If only I had been lucky enough to have my girlfriend leave as well. The intensity of the hangover only increased as the yelling began. My first reaction was to ask why I was being yelled at, but before I was asked I was made aware of my mistake. She was yelling at me because I got drunk on Valentine's Day!
