Wust has big lead in world allround championships

HEERENVEEN, Netherlands (AP) — Ireen Wust is closing in another speedskating title, after taking a commanding lead in the world allround championships after the first two races.

Wust, who claimed won two gold medals and three silvers at the Sochi Olympics, won both the 500-meter and 3,000-meter races on Saturday to open up a big lead over Yuliya Skokova and Olga Graf of Russia.

On Sunday, Wust has to skate the 1,500 - one of her favorite distances, and the 5,000. She won silver medals in both distances in Sochi.

In the men's competition, Koen Verweij of the Netherlands came second in both the 500 and 5,000 races to take the overall lead, narrowly ahead of countryman Jan Blokhuijsen. Havard Bokko of Norway was third.
