Xbox Hacker Sends SWAT Team to Florida Home

Hunter Gelinas is going without his Xbox 360 for the foreseeable future. His parents probably won’t mind, thanks to a prank call made by a hacker who had hacked into Hunter’s video game console. The hacker told police that Hunter had been stabbed and that his parents and others in the house were being held hostage.

“I come out of my room and they’ve got their guns pointed at me and stuff,” said Hunter Gelinas, who owns the hacked Xbox. “I open my door and I had the whole SWAT team down in the front door. I was like, ‘Oh my God, I’m going to die.’”

Police confiscated electronics from the home, including the Xbox 360, and are investigating the hack which apparently originated in Canada. Obviously there are some serious security flaws in the online gaming world. Having a SWAT team show up to your door is an unpleasant way to discover what they are.

Fortunately, nobody was hurt in the raid.

Sending a SWAT team to a hostage situation where there has been a violent crime is exactly what SWAT teams are meant to do by the way. Instead of sending paramilitary units to confiscate small amounts of marijuana, or serve warrants, SWAT teams should be used to stop violent criminals from killing people.

Imagine if this team had used flashbang grenades or shot the family pet, though. Things could very easily have taken a turn for the worse.

Why did they take the victims xbox and other electronic items? Apparently his xbox account got hacked and the victim may have been beating the hacker in a game and the hacker retailiated.

It says a lot when someone's first reaction after seeing the police is the belief that they are going to die.

Besides a phone call, what evidence was there that anything happened? I'd like to know if they had to get permission before they confiscated anything.

This was planned from the get go. As usual. They obvious want to make some bill to take away more of our rights.
