.XXX Domains, a New Business Opportunity

Forbes

The new .xxx domains are to be released shortly, you'll be able to purchase the site name of your desires under the new system for adult (the polite name for pornographic) domain names.

Well, not quite any name that you desire:

Hundreds, possibly thousands of celebrities have had their names permanently banned from the new .xxx adults-only internet domain.

El Reg can reveal that everyone from Justin Bieber to Piers Morgan has had their .xxx address placed into a permanent "reserved" status by the registry manager, ICM Registry.

This means that cybersquatters or crafty porn webmasters will not be able to register domains such as Beyonce.xxx or BritneySpears.xxx to drive traffic to their sites.

It sounds like an entirely sensible move. However, it does offer something of a money making opportunity for the entirely unscrupulous. Or for those who think they can make a better guess than ICM can at what names will attract traffic.

The trick would be to find a name (or names) which is famous enough that it would attract traffic (so Worstall.xxx won't do) but isn't so famous that ICM has already thought of it and blocked it from being sold.

And the thing is, in these sorts of battles, one of the things we've found out from the internet is that the inquisitiveness of the several billion of us out here will always beat, for a time at least, the work of the few hundred or few thousand in there.

A quick look at the tools here tells me that Michelle Obama is safe, but Michelle Malkin and Pam Geller are not (no particular reason for those three names, just the first three that came to mind).

My prediction is that it's going to be an interesting few months until the system settles down.
