Yahoo has just started killing off the password

Many companies are trying to kill the password in an attempt to improve the security of online services, and Yahoo is ready to give it a try. The company on Thursday announced new Yahoo Mail apps for iPhone, iPad and Android, featuring a bunch of new features including Yahoo Account Key, a more secure way of logging into the mail app. And, you’ve guessed it, Yahoo Account Key doesn’t need a password.

The new Yahoo Mail mobile app features smarter search and contacts management and support for rich email compose and support for Outlook.com, Hotmail and AOL Mail. However, the Yahoo Account Key is the feature that seems to stand out of the crowd.

Account Key uses push notifications to offer “fast and secure” ways to access Yahoo accounts from a desktop without requiring a password. Rather than logging in the usual password-based way, you’ll use your smartphone to identify yourself. Yahoo will send you a notification on the phone, and you’ll just have to press a button to confirm you want to sign into Yahoo Mail on a computer (see the GIF animation above).

Account Key is available globally on Yahoo Mail, and it’ll be extended to other Yahoo apps later this year. More details about Yahoo’s new Mail app for mobile and Account Key are available in the video below and at the source links.
