Yankees' Teixeira out 2nd day with sore left wrist

NEW YORK (AP) — Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira was out of the starting lineup against the Boston Red Sox for the second straight day because of a sore left wrist and may need a longer stretch to heal.

Before missing the Yankees' 6-4 win in Friday's series opener, Teixeira thought he would need a day or two off.

"He's a little bit better today," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said Saturday. "We'll see in the next couple days if we can get him back. I'm a little bit concerned if it's going to get to 100 percent."

    A two-time All-Star and four-time Gold Glove, Teixeira is hitting .257 with 23 homers and 78 RBIs.

"If we feel after two or three days maybe he needs a whole week, we might try to make it like that, or if he needs two weeks we'll do that," Girardi said. "We're going to do what it takes to try to get him healthy."

Teixeira hurt his wrist while batting against Boston on July 29, then had a cortisone injection two days later. He returned to the lineup Aug. 3 and played 14 consecutive days, hitting .259 with three homers and seven RBIs.

"He was better after the few days off a couple weeks and it seemed to come back a little bit. So that raises a little bit of a red flag," Girardi said. "Tex is good at playing beat up, and he's used to it in his career."

NOTES: LHP CC Sabathia threw a bullpen session and is on track to return Friday at Cleveland. Sabathia, 12-3 with a 3.56 ERA, felt pain in his right elbow during and after his start at Detroit on Aug. 8, causing the Yankees to put him on the DL.
