Yemen: Al-Qaida militants attack police station

SANAA, Yemen (AP) — Yemeni security officials say that al-Qaida militants have attacked a police station as part of an effort to make a comeback in a southern city.

The officials say one policeman was killed and a second was wounded early Monday in the city of Ghail Bawazir in an hour-long mortar attack. The city is located in oil rich Hadramawt province.

It was the first such attack since security forces drove al-Qaida militants out of the city last November, the officials said.

Separately, officials said that a US drone killed one al-Qaida suspect and injured two others in another city of Marib but gave no further details.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the press.
