Yemen president calls in US ambassador

SANAA, Yemen (AP) — Yemen's president on Tuesday called in the U.S. ambassador and told him he would sign a deal to step down, a U.S. official said. The embattled leader, who has made that pledge several times before, spoke as violence shook his capital.

President Ali Abdullah Saleh informed Ambassador Gerald Feierstein of a new cease-fire, but clashes on the streets threw that into doubt. Activists said seven protesters were killed and 10 wounded.

It was the first meeting between Saleh and a U.S. ambassador since Saleh returned from Saudi Arabia last month, said U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland. Saleh left Yemen after an attack on his compound in early June left him badly wounded.

Nine months of mass protests calling for his resignation have moved his powerful Arab neighbors, with U.S. backing, to propose a plan allowing Saleh to step down in exchange for immunity from prosecution. That reflected a reversal for the U.S., which up to then had backed Saleh as an ally in its fight against al-Qaida in Yemen.

Nuland said Saleh confirmed he would sign the Gulf Cooperation Council plan for him to step down — a claim he has made several times this year but then backed down at the last minute, infuriating both opponents and former allies.

She also said that Saleh confirmed that a cease-fire had been arranged with the opposition demonstrators, as announced on Yemen's state news agency's website.

On a statement on the website, Yemeni Vice President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi said that a cease-fire agreement was reached with the aim to "lift checkpoints, barricades and open schools ... to return normal life to the capital."

But late into Tuesday evening, troops were still firing into crowds of protesting civilians.

"It's not clear that that has been completely enforced on either side since then, but we do consider it a good step," Nuland told reporters. "There is still some fighting going on."

The protesters marched through the streets surrounding Change Square, a central intersection where the uprising against Saleh started in February.

"The people want to prosecute the butcher," the protesters chanted, and some held posters saying that after the death of Libya's Moammar Gadhafi, it was time for Saleh to "listen to your people."

The shooting broke out between Saleh's forces and renegade troops loyal to Maj. Gen. Ali Mohsen al-Ahmar, who defected to the opposition and whose forces protect the protesters.

There were concerns that the intensified fighting could undermine U.S. and Saudi efforts to fight Yemen's al-Qaida branch, considered by the U.S. to be the most dangerous of the terror network's affiliates after it plotted two failed attacks on American soil in recent years.

Also Tuesday, a Yemeni military plane crashed before landing at the al-Ammad air base near the southern city of Aden.

Four people on board were killed and 11 injured, according to a security official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to reporters. The official said a technical problem might have caused the crash. He said there were eight Syrians and seven Yemenis on board.

Raven, I don't see a way to respond to your posts so I'll respond to the three you made in a row: US/NATO cannot hold a candle to what Hitler did to the Jews. Get a grip and read a book in instead of the websites you get your info from; The people in Yemen are more likely to be slaughtered by their own government, than by US/NATO; He's saying he's ready to step down because he would rather retire to Saudi Arabia or some safe place like that where he can spend his days counting his money. Are you his nephew or something?

Saleh sees the Kaddafi writing on the wall. He knows he will be shot in the street like a common dog if he stays.

A personal desire vote and a evidence based fully group level supported ability too gather, log, link, track to the source, and demonstrate a unneeded harm based method of controlling the groups use of its own harmfull abilities is roughly what anyone and everyone needs too lead life from. Anywhere else is self defeating. Anyone missing there share means lifes overall leader is not as smart or complete and the harm hits us all. Why would anyone need more and why would anyone need you having less?..

in order too lead a group you don;t need more then a personal desire vote and a fully group level supporedt evidence based path too control the groups harm use( like anyone from group figures out that planets resorces like oil is not actualy ours its lifes defences forces and there will be hell too pay for all thoughs who have wasted it and then we provide the evidence thru explample demonstration or actualy live recorded footage of the event from theere the group don;t play with that harm unless there is justfied need that we can demonstrate too future defences forces so they don;t come and beat us mercylessly for our stupidity). no more is needed and there is no reason for anyone too want others having less.

When US intelligence says it considers someone to be the most dangerous of terrorists, you really have to stop and think hard, considering their knowledge and analysis on this issue for the last 10 years has pretty much sucked. The top man in Yemen is obviously no prize for his people or country, but it still makes one wonder why the USA has to be involved. Yemen isn't a US territory, it isn't the 51st state, they can't be buying alot of American imports, they definitely don't have the money to buy presidential advisors, senators or Supreme Court justices. Where's the deal and why is the USA being so "diplomatic" with this small Muslim country? Why the USA reversal about Saleh now, proposing a plan with Saudi Arabia (a country owned by a family) and calling in the US ambassador when the man has NEVER honored this agreement before. This is all sounding too IRAQ-ISH.

I see that is about time to nuke them, That would do 2 things. 1. Get rid of the al-Qaida threat and 2. do away with the leader., but unfortunately it would also kill alot of women and children. Which would not be good.
