YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, Wyo. (AP) — Crews are replacing and rerouting a section of the boardwalk in Yellowstone National Park's Black Sand Basin.

Black Sand Basin is a popular geothermal area located in the park's Upper Geyser Basin near Old Faithful. It has more than 300 feet of boardwalk that safely guides visitors through attractions such as Sunset Lake and Rainbow Pool.

However, as the thermal features constantly change underneath Yellowstone, some boardwalks that are carefully and strategically placed over their surfaces must be adjusted. About 120 feet of the Black Sand Basin boardwalk has been damaged by thermal water.

The Black Sand Basin boardwalk will be temporarily closed until at least the Memorial Day weekend. The park will announce when the basin will re-open in late May.

The National Park Service says it is unsafe and illegal to enter a closed thermal area in the park.
