    New York City Named the Most Expensive Place to Buy Auto Insurance in the United States

    A new report released by auto insurance company 4AutoInsuranceQuote.org finds that the Tri-State area encompassing the New York City metropolitan area has the highest insurance rates in the nation.

    Online auto insurance quote provider 4AutoInsuranceQuote.org released their study on the most expensive states to buy car insurance in 2011. The report shows that Tri-State members New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut boast the highest average insurance premiums in the nation. High population density, high crime rates, and poor traffic conditions all contributed to the expensive insurance costs, 4AutoInsuranceQuote.org said. While New Jersey ranked #1 in the USA for the third year in a row, New York and Connecticut also ranked in the top five of the most expensive states to buy insurance.

    High insurance rates, however, seem to mainly be concentrated around the New York city metropolitan area. 4AutoInsuranceQuote.org owner James Shaffer said that the difference between insurance rates in downtown Brooklyn and rural Connecticut, for example, are “staggering, to say the least.” New York auto insurance rates always have ranked as the most expensive in the country, they said, while rural areas tend to offer relatively inexpensive rates. In North Dakota, for example, the average driver only pays $554 on auto insurance per year. The state average for New Jersey auto insurance, on the other hand, is $1,184 per year.

    “If you are looking to save on your auto insurance costs,” Mr. Shaffer said, “you probably shouldn't live in the New York city area. With the amount you'll be spending on auto insurance, you are probably better off just taking public transportation. That means a lot coming from me, a life-long insurance agent.”

    Not all hope is lost for New York city residents, however. 4AutoInsuranceQuote.org's website lets visitors know the best ways to save on their auto insurance costs, even if you live in an area with sky-high average insurance rates. These include, but are not limited to: keeping a high credit score, driving a safe automobile, maintaining a good driving record, and combining your insurance policies with other members of your household.

    4AutoInsuranceQuote.org compiled their data based on findings from their own surveys as well as information made publicly available by the Insurance Information Institue (IIS). 4AutoInsuranceQuote.org releases many reports on the automobile insurance industry each year. Recent reports include “The Most and Least Expensive Cars To Insure,” “The 10 Most Stolen Automobiles,” and “The 10 Best Insurance Companies.” In addition to studies related to the auto insurance industry, their website features tools, tips, and how-to guides that help consumers track down affordable car insurance policies.
