New York to fete Giants with parade up Broadway

NEW YORK (AP) โ€” The New York Giants are returning from their Super Bowl win to a celebration the likes that only New York can throw: a ticker-tape parade in the Canyon of Heroes on Broadway, where the city has honored stars for almost a century.

Members of the Giants will be showered with a mile of confetti as they travel up Broadway from Battery Place. Then, in a ceremony at City Hall Plaza, the team will be presented with symbolic keys to the city.

Thousands of fans poured out of the subways and headed to the streets, dressed in head-to-toe Giants jerseys, hats and sweats. Some waited since 6 a.m. to catch a glimpse of their favorite players. About half of a Long Island high school class skipped school to see "a whole nation coming together in one place โ€” this parade," said Mike King, 16, of Wantagh, N.Y.

King and seven school friends got up at dawn, arriving by subway in lower Manhattan to join the crowds packed behind police barricades lining Broadway. He attributed the win to the stellar performance of quarterback Eli Manning and the hold-your-breath catch by Mario Manningham that led to the game-winning drive.

"It was one small step for the Giants, and one giant leap for the fans and the nation," King said.

"Big Blue gave us a game to remember, and on Tuesday we're going to give them a parade to remember," Mayor Michael Bloomberg said after Sunday's triumph in Indianapolis.

The parade for the Super Bowl champions will have an estimated economic impact of up to $38 million for the city, depending on the number of spectators, Bloomberg said. As many as 1 million are expected โ€” about a third of them from outside New York.

After the parade, the team will travel to New Jersey for a 3 p.m. rally at MetLife Stadium.

This will be the second Super Bowl championship parade for the Giants in four years. They also beat the Patriots in the NFL title game in 2008.

But it's hard to imagine a victory more exciting than the Giants' last-minute, 21-17 victory over the Patriots. The hero of this year's parade undoubtedly will be Super Bowl MVP Manning. Manning and Manningham connected on the clutch play, as the receiver made the over-the-shoulder catch along the sideline.

On Monday, 250 fans nabbed pairs of tickets to the festivities at City Hall. About 50,000 people entered sweepstakes for a place at the ceremony.

The parade itself is open to all and promises to draw impenetrable crowds behind police barricades, as it did four years ago.

Three large screens around City Hall will allow members of the public to watch the ceremony. Streets will be closed between Broadway and Church Street from Canal to Pearl streets, as will Brooklyn Bridge access to and from Park Row.

New York has feted its public heroes since 1919, with the first parade for World War I General John Pershing and his victorious troops.

They were followed by more than 200 parades honoring everyone from aviator Charles Lindbergh to scientist Albert Einstein, Pope John Paul, South African leader Nelson Mandela and pianist Van Cliburn. Their names are chiseled into the Broadway sidewalks.

The Giants will be showered with at least 30 tons of manufactured confetti from skyscrapers lining Broadway.

The Giants of New Jersey get a parade, but the real Giants home from Iraq get nothing.

Nobody in NYC seems to remember the Veterans who served in Iraq. NYC can honor overpaid ego-centric athletes, but its "too difficult" to arrange a parade for the real heros..

Bloomberg said the parade is fine as long as there are no sugary sweets or salty snacks handed out.

Okay, so The Big Apple throws a ticker-tape parade for the East Rutherford, New Jersey Giants!

I think it would have been MUCH more appropriate to throw a ticker-tape parade in honor of our REAL heros! Those returning armed forces veterans who are coming home from Iraq!

These are seperate issues, but point well taken. Maybe each state could have the people of their great state assist in a special parade for returning vets, whom in my eyes are also HEROES.

They can cut programs and funding for schools while screaming we must balance the budget, yet they blow money on a parade? Hey mayor...how many teachers salaries would that parade cover? Or cops, fireman, sanitation (who gets to clean up that mess). All for a bunch of overpriced people playing a GAME!!!!!

What a waste. The parade should have been in New Jersey. Less money and less inconvenience.

As Joe writes in his post, "The Pentagon asked New York City NOT to hold a parade for Iraq veterans because there are troops still fighting in Afghanistan". Yes, the military deserves parades when it is deemed appropriate. Keep in mind that our Nation has gone through a lot of crap these last years. Whether it be NY for winning the Super Bowl or St. Louis for winning the World Series, these special events are for OUR people. Our people need things to CELEBRATE. If the Giants were not your team, so be it. They are the team that deserved to win and the team that deserves a parade. Our Country needs to celebrate the important things for our Nation, our States, our Cities and for our Communities. Agreee, let's do a big parade for the troops all over the US of A when it is appropriate.

Outstanding comment. Great for the Giants but the True Ameican heros have yet to be put on their pedistal and Their time must come.

Donald,When is it going to be "appropriate"? As we wind down Iraq & Afghanistan, we are increasing our presence in Africa. Do we wait for those troops to come home, too? Or the ones currently stationed/deployed to any number of foreign countries? It's been 10 years & it's #$%$ well time that we do *something* for our troops, besides allowing the military & the VA to screw the wounded.

Wow, the city will throw a parade for a bunch of over paid Neanderthals, but the people who put their life on the line to support and defend this country are told to forgetaboutit!

And, still, nothing for the returning veterans. New York is a pathetic he11 hole full of vacuous, self-absorbed nothings all piled on top of each other, patting each other on the back for being so cosmopolitan. So sad.
