New York Times executive editor Dean Baquet has successful surgery to remove kidney tumor

NEW YORK (AP) -- New York Times Executive Editor Dean Baquet (buh-KAY') says he had successful surgery over the weekend to remove a malignant tumor from his kidney.

The paper says Baquet told staff in an email Monday that he will spend about week recovering before returning to the newsroom.

According to the Times (http://nyti.ms/1lyFMsr ), Baquet says doctors discovered the tumor Thursday and felt it required "immediate attention."

The 57-year-old Baquet says doctors have given him "an excellent prognosis."

He had been elevated to executive editor following the abrupt dismissal of Jill Abramson last month.

Harvard University announced last week that Abramson will teach undergraduate courses on narrative nonfiction in the fall and spring semesters.
