The New Yorker Nails Its Anthony Weiner Cover

It's not easy to make a joke about Anthony Weiner a week after all the simple jokes have already been made. You can't just bank on a Weiner pun. Or a "Carlos Danger" joke. But that's exactly the position that The New Yorker found itself in, looking to plan its cover art for next week's magazine.

Somehow, The New Yorker and artist John Cuneo pulled it off. Here it is, in all its splendor:

(New Yorker)

How'd Cuneo come up with it? A lot of loose thinking:

Free association made me think of the Empire State Building, and then King Kong, the iconic image of him straddling it. And then Weiner sexting, his head tilted and looking a certain way—I just stumbled upon the image as I was sketching. But all I could think about while working on this piece was, 'Will Weiner still be in the race by the time it runs?' "

In any event, what we got a strikingly original, bizarre piece of 2013 art. If this cover doesn't scream "America," nothing else does.
